Can we 'turn off' new OneDrive shortcut naming convention due to causing long filename backup fail
Microsoft has changed the default OneDrive folder naming convention to now include 'SITE NAME' - 'FOLDER NAME'. In our case, we create a dedicated SharePoint 'Project' (Site) and a few 'Document Libraries' within the Site for each project. The 'Document Libraries' include different permissions for external sharing and differing user purpose. The recent change now means that all linked OneDrive folders include extremely long names similar to the following: We also back up Sharepoint and also individual user computers on an external Windows server. However, the Windows system only permits a maximum total file path name of 256 characters. In the example above the addition of the duplicate '- 10092 Traralgon HV Maintenance' has added 32 un-needed characters to all file paths on the Windows machine and we are seeing multiple backup failures of individual files as a result. This appears as a very short-sighted 'forced' change by Microsoft OneDrive which is in direct conflict with Microsoft Windows machines?? The short question is whether there is any way to turn off the automated addition. We can manually remove the extra text and OneDrive - SharePoint syncing continues to work perfectly. However, this manual change must be made on each machine for each project which is not a viable solution. Similar folder naming was addressed previously but in reverse: 'Add shortcut to OneDrive' no longer includes site name in shortcut - just library name | Microsoft Community Hub https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/5220424/why-does-add-shortcut-to-onedrive-library-change-t I'm surprised that there appears to be no other persons raising this as a concern which leads me to think that perhaps we are doing something unique or others simply haven't noticed the issue?? We have attempted to 'fix' the issue from within our Sharepoint 'flow' script (used to set up each project SITE), but without success. This folder naming appears driven by OneDrive, not SharePoint. Thanks in advance.35Views1like1CommentDate taken option removed!
I’m finding One Drive increasingly frustrating as a photographer as the date taken option has been removed and my files are badly muddled, this option was part of the app for years so why did the developer remove it. Very annoying for professional photo work so bring it back.6Views0likes0CommentsCan't Open Draw.io In oneDrive
When I click the Open button on a .drawio file stored in SharePoint/OneDrive, I only get the screen shown in the screenshot below. It asks me to download the file, but does not give me an option to open it online. I would like to know: How can I open and edit .drawio files directly in SharePoint/OneDrive (without downloading them to my local computer)? Any guidance or best practices would be greatly appreciated.9Views0likes0CommentsIs it possible to restore deleted files?
Hi, I received a notice that my free OneDrive is almost full. So I deleted a lot of files from my OneDrive to find out they vanished from my computer as well. How is it possible? Isn't it supposed that the cloud saves copies of the data on my computer? I also cleared the OneDrive recycle bin. Is it any chance to restore my files? Can I do it if I get subscription, e.g. for one month? Thanks in advance for help.32Views0likes0CommentsShortcuts to Folders Synced Between Two Computer Desktops
I have OneDrive installed on a work desktop and a laptop I use at home and when traveling. I sync the desktop between both machines. I want to have a shortcuts on my desktops that open OneDrive folders. This previously worked fine for me. But I recently had to reinstall OneDrive and I am unable to configure it properly now. The shortcut works on one machine or the other, but not both. If I create the shortcut on the desktop it works correctly there, but not on the laptop. If I create it on the laptop, it won't work on the desktop. The failing "folder" looks like this: Because the file path is slightly different (because of unique usernames) I tried using a variable instead: "C:\Users\%username%\OneDrive - Company Name\Work Files" But that still didn't solve the problem. Can someone help me understand what I'm doing wrong? Thanks in advance!83Views0likes1CommentOneDrive addmitting losing gigabites of content
I've been using OneDrive since it was called Windows Live SkyDrive, circa 2010. After years of using it as an archive for past projects (I'm a graphic designer), I've recently discovered that almost every single project I had there (and nowhere else) has disappeared. In reply, OneDrive escalation representative said “There is no possibility for recovering the data. Trust me, if there had been a single percentage of chance, I would have taken it”. This is unheard of; I’ve lost a large portion of my portfolio from 2012 to 2021. Did it happen to anyone else?31Views0likes0CommentsHacked: Microsoft refuse access to account
I've been hacked. Probably my fault (according to my son). Following many email discussions, MS have accepted my 365 + email are now the property of 'Moscow and India'. Nearly 20 years of files are gone, they emptied my hard drive as well, returnable for a cost. What I cant fathom, is why MS will not give me access to down load my OneDrive? They have quite happily suspended the email which is the key to the drive. Why should I ever bother in trusting MS again? Anyone had a similar issue? did you get your OneDrive back? I cannot find a telephone number to 'speak' to some one in authority.Solved52Views0likes1CommentSharing Folders Issue
Hi I have been trying to get my head around things, and had a bit of help but now I am stuck. I'm involved with a charity and we use the cloud to share essential information with volunteers. Our previous system, which closed down, allowed us to share files / folders without people having an account. However when I tried to share a folder with one of my test email addresses, it wants me to create a microsoft account, with authenticator. Now while I fully understand the implications of security, the share is literally one folder which they can't edit anyway. Is there any way around this? It's going to cause grief and I believe will put people off. I just want to be able to share a folder that people can access via the link. Thank you for your help.53Views0likes1CommentHow to use onedrive on more than one device
I am trying to help my Dad with his onedrive but am struggling to understand this myself. He has the Personal account which I believe he is correct it allows you to save files on more than one device. When we log in on his main pc and look in devices it lists his old PC but doesnt show the computer he is currently on. Would this be normal or should it be listed? I am reluctant to delete the old pc in case I mess everything up before we continue. If he adds another device (laptop) - firstly does he need to log in with same email address or can he use a secondary email address that he prefers to use on laptop to keep everything seperate. Secondly if he has two devices registered, does one drive save everything from both together or will they shown as separate? On each device would he see the saved files from the other (in a new folder perhaps)? Hopefully that makes sense! Thanks Michelle (and Dad!)Solved100Views0likes3CommentsMissing OneDrive options in classic context menu - Windows 11 24H2
HI A few days ago, OneDrive options have gone from the Context Menu (classic - I didn't go back to a new context menu). That happened on two computers OneDrive version 25.149 (I enabled preview as I thought it may solve the problem, the issue happened once I was on the production version) I found an old topic there with registry key deleting, but I don't have these keys. My menu looks that: No option for OneDrive - share, download, save on disk, previous version. OneDrive is set to files on demand. Is there any option to restore this option? Without resetting OneDrive/reinstalling it?264Views1like3CommentsForcing share to Onedrive business
Background: I have Onedrive personal & business both set up and working. I have a shared link that I want to connect to my onedrive business. Onedrive auto logs in to my personal account regardless of the chrome profile, login status of either onedrive, browser used etc. Apparently the ultimate solution is: open an incognito window, paste the sharing link which opens onedrive online un-signed in. Now: I enter my business account login (a *.onmicrosoft.com account) and before even getting a password screen I get Interestingly (to me), if I open the same browser, type onedrive.live.com, click signin and enter the same business account it logs in fine. Please help, thanks in advance. Mullin55Views0likes2CommentsRestoring whole One Drive

Hi All Let me first explain what I have setup I have created my OneDrive on my computer to sync only selected folders to my SD card. (Many reasons and I have found this very useful) I customized the OneDrive location using this article https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/install-onedrive-on-an-external-drive-6307e24b-d7a4-493f-bf43-47345b2c11fe I now have a new computer and will be just moving this SD card over and all my data should be there and ready to go. I have only selected some of the OneDrive folders to sync and of them some of it is made locally available so I can work on them even if I am off line (like traveling on a plane with no internet) or am in the woods or very remote locations where I get no connectivity. Now to the question I plan to setup my new computer with the SD card and hopefully can follow the article (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/install-onedrive-on-an-external-drive-6307e24b-d7a4-493f-bf43-47345b2c11fe) and once more link up the SD card (with all the information it has locally) Where does Windows 10/OneDrive store information about which are the folder I have selected and what to do with them? I cannot find this information and maybe I do not need it - unsure about this. If I do as stated in article https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/install-onedrive-on-an-external-drive-6307e24b-d7a4-493f-bf43-47345b2c11fe with the old SD card in my new computer will I be up and running or is there something I should follow to make this work well. Remember I cannot have the SD card in two locations to know the information. Any guidance or pointers from any one who has done this would be very helpful. I wish MS helps people who want to customize or adapt things by giving more clear instruction on how they design or document so people can customize. I struggle with this and how MS does their software. While on OneDrive - anyone written batch files on the computer to create onedrive folders, then share it with users along with setting expiration dates? These can be done on the browser, but one folder at a time with clickoholic interface and it gets repetitive very quickly if you have to do this for 40 students every semester - Of course MS has not way of doing this at all (at least to my knowledge and my reading)117Views0likes3CommentsSymlink Directory Perpetually Shows “Sync Pending” Status
Client uses NAS drive for shared documents in a small office. He asked to be able to access these documents while traveling, so I created a Symbolic Link directory in his OneDrive folder (“%UserProfile%\OneDrive\NAS Files”) pointing to the mapped network drive (S:\). This worked for quite a while, i.e. several years, until recently when the OneDrive status for that directory only is stuck on “Sync Pending” even though the overall OneDrive status says files are synced. To date, I have tried the following: Quit and restart OneDrive app Unlink and relink workstation to OneDrive account Rename SymLink directory to “NAS Files New” Add test documents to directory on both workstation and in web-based OneDrive interface Deleted entire SymLink directory from both workstation and web-based OneDrive interface, waited for changes to process, and readded SymLink directory After the last attempt listed above, the directory partially synced again but did not complete and still shows pending status. Client can access some, but not all, of the needed files in the directory. Any suggestions for further troubleshooting steps? Many thanks in advance!Solved61Views0likes2CommentsOnedrive recover deleted files
