There is a current issue with Word for Mac (certain versions at least). There should be an update available which supposedly fixes the problem. See https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/my-word-keeps-freezing-word-for-mac/3b49f28e-... and https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdates/update-history-office-for-mac.

Ensure both your Word application and macOS are up to date. Software updates often include fixes for performance issues. What's more, lack of storage space can sometimes cause applications to run slowly or freeze. Check if your Mac has enough free storage. Aim for at least 10% of your total disk space to be free.

I got to you
I have also experienced significant speed issues with Word on Mac for some time. I have a latest-generation MacBook with an M2 processor and 32 GB of RAM. Despite always installing the latest versions of Word, from 16.85 to 16.89 (available through the beta channel), the problem persists. I read that with version 16.84 the issue does not occur, and I can confirm that this resolves the problem. However, it is concerning that Microsoft has not yet fixed the issue in the subsequent versions (16.85-16.89).
