Changes to SharePoint Online Content Types

Learn Expert

It seemed that there was an issue of content types not being available on new tenants.  However, after digging deeper (and with the help of some peers on the forum), it turns out that for some reason the content types would be available by default for some site collections without the publishing features explicitly turned on while others they didn't.

The content types affected by this were as follows:

The recent changes introduced to SharePoint Online have resulted in a number of deprecated content types.  In particular, the deprecated pages seem to focus largely around Pages, Display Templates, as well as some other publishing-related content types.  Based on a quick comparison of a newly-provisioned Office 365 tenant and one that has been live for about 2 years, the following content types have been deprecated:

Hi Haniel,

i am not sure if i understand what you are saying. You say these content types are not available anymore in a new tennant? did you have exact same features on etc.

it is hard to believe all of them are depreciated as they are still being used and no announcements have been made arround these content types.

Kr,

Paul

Hi Paul,

I also find it hard to believe and am investigating this further.  The tenant I created was a demo tenant and have followed the same steps I've followed many times before on previous tenants.  There are other anomalies I've noticed (such as the inability to activate Sandbox solutions), so maybe there's something that needs to be configured to bring back the old functionality.

Hi Haniel,

curious what the results will be and be sure the tennant is not in service mode as for example last friday there was a problem getting into SharePoint..

keep posting your work please!

Kr,

Paul

These content types would only exist if the new tenant has the Publishing Infrastructure feature activated. Is the Publishing Infrastructure feature activated?

What does this mean exactly? Does the content types just disappear? What will happen to the content created by these content types? Is there a way to still use them?

Hi Doug,

Interestingly, I have compared two tenants that had site collections that weren't based on the publishing tempalte nor did they have the features turned on.  Yet one had these content types and the other didn't.

To avoid confusion for others reading this post, I will update the message.

Thanks for your input.

Hi Haniel,

Could it be that you had the publishing feature activated on the old site and deactivated it later. This could be the issue that the content types are in the old site and not in the new one.

kr,

Paul
