Automatically update document styles
So this might come across as daft, but I have an issue with style sheets and existing documents I'd have thought that selecting this option, when applying a style to an existing document, would force the document to adopt the styles defined in the DOTX. If I change a style on the orignal DOTX I'd have thought the changes would be reflected in the document. But it doesn't and it does not refresh the document to reflect the changes made. Am I doing something wrong here? If not, how can I force existing text for accept the new styles. ps - Re-editing the existing document context isn't an option because we've lots of documents covering some 630+ pages which we regularly update 4 times a year.CitrusTreeUKSep 22, 2025Occasional Reader2Views0likes0CommentsTypography: Expand Character Spacing by Relative Value
Right now I can only "adjust" character spacing by absolute values, measured in points (see below). I could swear this is new—haven't I always been able to expand character spacing by relative values, measured in percentages?jamesericbutlerSep 21, 2025Copper Contributor17Views1like0CommentsIn Microsoft Word headers, how do I enter content that differs on each page without section breaks?
I am currently finishing up a daily devotional book -- that is, a book that has one page for each day of the year (in this case including February 29th for leap years). I need a header that contains unchanging content (the name of the book), and two predictably variating items: the day of the year, and a running number of days. For example: Crumbs ~ February 01 / Day 32 Crumbs ~ February 02 / Day 33 I am hoping to find a way to feed a formula into the Word header that will cooperate (even with the February 29th issues). It is important that the header remain consistent in this upward count--even if I move some of the pages back or forth. I also want to avoid including a section break at the end of each page. Does anyone have any ideas of how to make this work?JeremyBajSep 21, 2025Occasional Reader5Views0likes0CommentsPage colour fill effects option missing
I am using version 16.101 of Word on MacOS 15.6.1 I want to set an image as the background of my document's pages, and have done so in the past by going to page colour<fill effects. Now I can't see that option anywhere in desptop or online. I can't use a watermark because I need the image to cover the whole page, not stopping at the margins. Does anyone know how to fix this?Fr0d0nSacquetSep 20, 2025Copper Contributor5Views0likes0CommentsBack to my old settings
Everything was fine this morning. Then I tried to download a template for Word. Now my screen has changed, its 19 inches wide. I want to go back to my old settings. I am open to all suggestions. Thanks in advance for your help, JimJimMcGivneySep 18, 2025Copper Contributor27Views0likes1CommentIndex tab leaders don't reflect tab leaders in the Index Style
Contex: 700 page word document with multiple indexes - about 1500 index items in each of three indexes Issue: Indexes appear with dotted tab leaders in front of page number. Index 1 style (and the other levels as well) have a tabs without dotted leaders. Question: How to get rid of the dotted tab leaders if they don't follow the relevant index style when the index is updated. Note that I have tried clearing the index style changing the index style creating a clean document with good styles and copying the index definition from that document creating a clean document template with good styles and adding that (and activating it) to the document And numerous other methods that I have not documented. Any thoughts on how to address this (other than applying the style every time I update)?bradholtzSep 18, 2025Copper Contributor49Views0likes2CommentsHelp for Excel shown in place of help for Word
When I press Help or F1 in a Word document, I get a list of topics for Excel, and, when I do a basic search, I'm always told that the topic isn't there, e.g. 'Sorry, there are no results for "font"'.andrewlbSep 16, 2025Copper Contributor23Views0likes1CommentAvery Word Template – Text Boxes Not Linked, But Typing in One Moves Content in Others
Hello, I’m helping a client who has been using a Word document with an Avery name tag template for years. Recently, she noticed some unusual behavior: The document is built with multiple text boxes laid out for name tags. The text boxes are not linked (we checked, no “create link/break link” settings). However, when she types in one text box, the content in other text boxes shifts around or moves. It’s not duplicating the text, but it’s disrupting the alignment/layout of all the tags on the page. This happens even with brand new text boxes created in this document on her computer. If we create a brand new document with text boxes on a different computer, it works normally. But once that file is opened on her computer, the same issue occurs again. So far we’ve tried: Resetting Word settings (renaming Normal.dotm and Word registry keys). Testing with a new blank document. Checking for linked text boxes. Saving as a new file/template. The problem seems isolated to this one computer/Word installation, but it affects both old and new documents once they’re opened here. Other computer with the same template doesn't do this. Has anyone seen this before? Any advice on what else we can try, or how to ensure her Avery templates work normally again, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Cheers! - ColinrosecitytechSep 16, 2025Copper Contributor17Views0likes1Comment
