Accessing "Users" file from old computer

What used to be my C: hard disk is now connected as external drive on my new PC. I try to copy some data files from the Users directory of that disk to another disk (I cannot copy the whole directory  because it is huge) but I don't have access to them. Trying to get permissions thru secutity->advanced I get "Unable to display current owner." and trying to change the owner from SYSTEM to my username gets me "unable to set new owner... / The file or directory is corrupted or unreadable".

I get the same error msg about corrupted file/ directory  trying to run copy command line.
