Future of SharePoint Events

Brass Contributor

In SharePoint online, when you create a Communication Site, one of the out-of-the-box features is a an Event list.  This list doesn't have the modern look as compared to other features in SharePoint.  Does anyone happen to have any insights into the future of Events in SharePoint sites?  Do you think they will be modernized at some point? Or are they going away?

Hello @TandyWine

it's only a default view "issue"...by design :D

But, it is a modern list, and you can create a modern calendar view and set it as default.

- Go to Site contents

- set the new experience explicit on your events list

- open events (the classic calendar view will be open)

- switch view to all items (yeah, open in modern ;))

- create a new, modern, calendar view

- set the view as default

Hope it works.

@TandyWine It's a fair question regarding the future direction of the Events list in SharePoint communication sites. As of now, Microsoft has not announced specific plans to modernize or replace the out-of-the-box Events list.

The Events list continues to be included in new communication sites, indicating Microsoft sees ongoing value in the feature for end users even if the UI is dated. Moreover, Microsoft has heavily invested in modern experiences like pages, web parts, and templates over the past years. However, updating legacy components like Events just hasn't seemed to be the priority.

With the SharePoint Framework maturing and adoption growing, Microsoft seems to be embracing an extensibility model where third parties can build modern solutions on top of SharePoint rather than replacing every legacy feature.

Additionally, features like the modern Calendar web part offer some overlapping functionality with Events. Over time, Microsoft may look to improve integrations across out-of-box tools for scheduling.
