Data storage for Microsoft Forms in Australia

Iron Contributor

Hi  @Kathy Liu and the Microsoft Forms product team

I'm really happy to see the update that was made late last year (November 2022) about Forms data storage in Australia: For customers in Australia, Microsoft Forms customer data will be stored at rest in Australia for all new tenants using Forms and existing tenants that have not previously used Forms.

I have a couple of questions regarding the above:

  • What date did the new changes come into effect for new customers?
  • Are customers able to view or confirm where their Forms data is stored? Admin centre, PowerShell, etc?
  • For existing tenants who have previously used Forms, is the data still stored in the US? What about data for new forms that are created by these customers?
  • Is there a plan to migrate existing Australian customers forms data to Australian-based data centres?

Thank you

Matt

  • What date did the new changes come into effect for new customers?

     [Answer]: October 15th, 2022.

  • Are customers able to view or confirm where their Forms data is stored? Admin centre, PowerShell, etc?

[Answer]: Unfortunately, there is no way for end users to check the data location. You can raise a support ticket with your tenant ids, and PG will help you with your request.

  • For existing tenants who have previously used Forms, is the data still stored in the US? What about data for new forms that are created by these customers?

[Answer]: For existing tenants who have previously used Forms, the data will always be stored in the US, no matter if it's old or new forms.

  • Is there a plan to migrate existing Australian customers forms data to Australian-based data centres?

[Answer]: Yes, PG is working on a solution for old tenants' data migration, but no ETA has been committed at this time.

@Dingkun Xie  I don't suppose there is any update on this re migration of existing tenants for Australian tenants? Last update 6m ago. This affects the use of the updates app as well.
Cheers Kieran

Unfortunately, there are no new updates for end users. You can raise a support ticket with your business justification to the product team, and they will prioritize your request based on your business scenarios.
