Struggling with VLookup

Part of my coursework is to explain and use VLOOKUP functions, yet i cant seem to understand what it is or how it works. Could someone give me an easy to understand explanation as well as an example?

the thing is, i dont have any data that im supposed to use, i need to make it up. The task of the assignment is explaining how to use VLOOKUP but i dont even know how to use it myself
