New OneNote action from doc library = folder?

We have SP Online document libraries configured to start new OneNote notebooks (OneNote template configured during library creation). However, since last week sometime (about the time we upgraded to Office 2016) when we create using the "New" action, we get a folder with a few OneNote page icons within it rather than the single OneNote icon. If we close the that particular notebook within the full app, open it again within the full app, and sync this clears up. Or if we have somebody else (not the creator) open one of the pages, it clears up. Is anybody else seeing something like this?

Sounds like something worth a support call. Strictly OneNote files in SharePoint are folders, but the UI is meant to hide that from you, it sounds like for some reason this isn't happening until the client app properly sets it when you close the file.
