According to my course, this is the best solution for splitting a worksheet into just 2 Panes.
However, when I split the sheet in column A, I appear to have 2 panes just fine. Why did they say this is the best solution?
With the active cell on any row but in column A, hit Alt W S to split the panes to a top and bottom.
