misplaced dropdown list

Copper Contributor

Hi,

when clicking in the arrow to make the dropdown window appear, the list appear far away from the cell, sometimes it does not appear at all (I guess it is out of the screen)

It only happens with some files, other ones are working fine.

I am working with office 365 in windows 10.

any ideas?

Thanks in advance!!

When you encounter issues with dropdown lists in Excel where they appear far away from the cell or do not appear at all, it could be due to various factors. Here are some troubleshooting steps to help resolve this issue:

  1. Zoom Level:
    • First, check the zoom level of your Excel sheet. If the zoom level is too high or too low, it can affect the position and visibility of dropdown lists.
    • Adjust the zoom level to a standard value (e.g., 100%) by clicking the zoom slider in the bottom right corner of the Excel window.
  2. Screen Resolution:
    • Verify your screen resolution settings. Sometimes, dropdown lists can behave strangely on screens with unusual resolutions.
    • Adjust your screen resolution to a standard setting if possible.
  3. Excel Workbook Settings:
    • Check if the affected Excel file has specific settings that could affect dropdown lists, such as worksheet protection, cell locking, or conditional formatting rules.
    • Remove any unusual formatting or settings that might interfere with dropdown lists.
  4. Add-Ins and Macros:
    • Disable any Excel add-ins or macros that are active in the affected file. These can sometimes interfere with Excel's normal behavior.
  5. Update Office 365:
    • Ensure that your Office 365 installation is up-to-date. Microsoft frequently releases updates that include bug fixes and improvements.
  6. Excel Online Repair:
    • If the issue persists, try repairing your Office 365 installation. To do this:
      • Close all Office applications.
      • Go to "Control Panel" > "Programs" > "Programs and Features."
      • Locate Microsoft Office 365 in the list of installed programs.
      • Right-click it and select "Change."
      • Choose "Quick Repair" or "Online Repair" and follow the prompts to repair your installation.
  7. Excel Safe Mode:
    • Launch Excel in Safe Mode to rule out any potential add-in or extension conflicts. You can do this by holding down the Ctrl key while starting Excel. This will start Excel without any add-ins.
  8. Try Another User Account:
    • Sometimes, issues can be user-specific. Try opening the problematic file in Excel using another user account on your computer to see if the issue persists.
  9. File Corruption:
    • If the issue only occurs with specific files, it is possible that those files are corrupted. Try opening the problematic file on another computer to see if the issue persists.

By following these steps, you should be able to troubleshoot and resolve the issue with misplaced or missing dropdown lists in Excel. If none of this helps, then you should insert the file (including sensitive data). The text and the steps were created with the help of AI.
