Excel 365 Closing Every Time It Saves

Copper Contributor

I have been using the same computer without this issue for a year. Today, every time any Excel workbook attempts to save, Excel shuts down. I have tried all of the possible solutions I can find online - disabling graphics accelerator, running in safe mode - still shuts down, checking Task Manager, repairing, uninstalling and reinstalling, disabling all add-ins, etc. Nothing has worked. I do not receive an error message. Excel just saves the file and shuts down. I do not understand why this would start happening all of a sudden this morning.

Experiencing unexpected behavior like Excel closing every time it saves can be frustrating. While there could be various reasons for this issue, here are a few potential solutions you can try:

  1. Check for Updates: Ensure that your Excel version is up to date. Install any available updates for Excel and the operating system to address any known issues.
  2. Repair Office Installation: Use the built-in repair feature to repair your Office installation. Go to the Control Panel, locate Microsoft Office in the list of installed programs, and select the "Repair" option.
  3. Disable COM Add-ins: Disable any COM add-ins that might be causing conflicts. In Excel, go to "File" > "Options" > "Add-Ins" and disable any add-ins that are enabled.
  4. Disable Hardware Graphics Acceleration: Try disabling hardware graphics acceleration in Excel. Go to "File" > "Options" > "Advanced" and under the Display section, check the box for "Disable hardware graphics acceleration."
  5. Disable Antivirus Software: Temporarily disable your antivirus software to see if it is causing any conflicts with Excel. If disabling the antivirus resolves the issue, contact the antivirus provider for further guidance.
  6. Clean Boot: Perform a clean boot to start Windows with minimal startup programs and services. This helps determine if any third-party software is causing the problem. Instructions for performing a clean boot can be found on the Microsoft Support website.

If Excel 365 is closing every time it saves, it could be due to a few possible reasons. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue:

  1. Update Excel: Make sure you have the latest updates installed for Excel 365. Microsoft frequently releases updates that address bugs and improve stability.

  2. Check for add-ins: Sometimes, add-ins or extensions can conflict with Excel and cause it to close unexpectedly. Disable any recently installed or suspicious add-ins and see if the issue persists.

  3. Repair Office installation: Use the Office Repair tool to repair any potential issues with the installation. You can access this tool through the Control Panel (Windows) or System Preferences (Mac).

  4. Disable hardware acceleration: Excel uses hardware acceleration to improve performance, but it can sometimes cause stability issues. Disable hardware acceleration by going to File > Options > Advanced, and under the Display section, uncheck the "Disable hardware graphics acceleration" option.

  5. Disable auto-recover: The auto-recover feature in Excel saves your work at regular intervals. However, if there's a problem with the auto-recover process, it can cause Excel to crash. Disable auto-recover by going to File > Options > Save, and under the Save workbooks section, set the "Save AutoRecover information" option to "Disable AutoRecover."

  6. Clear Excel temporary files: Temporary files generated by Excel can sometimes cause conflicts. Clear these temporary files by searching for "%temp%" in File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac), and delete any Excel-related temporary files.

  7. Check for conflicting software: Certain software applications, such as antivirus programs or system utilities, can interfere with Excel's normal operation. Temporarily disable or whitelist Excel in such software to see if it resolves the issue.

  8. Run Excel in safe mode: Launch Excel in safe mode, which starts Excel with minimal features and add-ins. If Excel runs fine in safe mode, it indicates that an add-in or extension is causing the problem. You can then disable or remove the problematic add-in.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, it might be helpful to reach out to Microsoft Support or the Excel community for further assistance.
