We're Listening!

Microsoft

Greetings Microsoft Edge Insiders!

Let us start off by saying, welcome to the Microsoft Edge Insider community! We’re so excited to have you here, and we can’t wait to start learning from you. If you haven’t read our Welcome to the Microsoft Edge Insider community article yet, we recommend starting there. It has a bunch of great information on how we got here and where we’re heading.

Our mission:
Our mission is to create a thriving community of valuable Insiders, like you, so we can closely listen and learn how Microsoft Edge can be better. We believe that having open, honest, and continued conversations with our Insider community is a great way to build a close relationship with our users.

Why do all of this? Because we want to build a browser that’s deeply grounded in your needs. Your voice is the most important piece of helping us build a better Microsoft Edge. The feedback you provide leads to meaningful conversations that may ultimately produce the new features, bug fixes, and other improvements that matter the most to you. Listening is just the beginning for us. Our true goal is to build Microsoft Edge with the voice of the Insider community as our guiding light.

Community voice

When we announced the next version of Microsoft Edge back in December, we asked a simple question: If you could change one thing about the web, what would it be?
listening-graphic2.png
We were completely humbled by the over 40k comments you’ve shared with us. That’s a whole lot of ideas. Thank you!

You tell us that you love some things about the current Microsoft Edge browser, like the smooth scrolling experience, our Fluent Design and the precision touchpad, and you hope we’ll bring those things forward into the next version too.

Some of you are frustrated with the way that sites render so differently depending on the browser you're using to view them. You also tell us that Web Standards are on the top of your mind. We hear that you want all browsers to adopt the same standards. We hear from some of you web developers that you want new capabilities added to the web platform; whether that be in CSS, HTML or JavaScript. Another top request is an improved dev tools experience.

We hear that you have strong feelings about online advertising. Some of you wish ads that pop-up would just disappear and the same for auto-playing ads. While others feel a strong desire to remove or fundamentally change how online advertising works on the web. There is concern how these advertisements enable sites to track you as you browse which feels "creepy" and "invasive."

The overwhelming majority of comments (we’re talking thousands of messages) that we have read wish for a change in the fundamental attributes of the web. Make it faster, safer, more reliable and more private. You want your browsers to have smaller memory footprints, lower battery consumption, higher rendering speed and better stability. We agree with you wholeheartedly! The attributes that you say matter most in your browsing experience are performance, privacy, and reliability. So that is where we are starting.
listening-graphic3.png
We are focusing on delivering outstanding fundamentals. Speed, stability, accessibility, compatibility, security, and privacy are always top of mind for us. We are using your comments and suggestions to guide us while we are getting the new Microsoft Edge ready for its debut.

What’s next?
In the meantime, jump in, download the Microsoft Edge Insider Channels, and let us know what you think. What’s working well? Where do we need to improve? Over time, we hope to build healthy engagement and feedback loops with our community members.

listening-graphic4.png
We’re also mindful that our users have preferred ways to engage with us. Whether you view the latest information on the Microsoft Edge Insider website, enjoy direct discussions on our forum, need a personal support assistant via help (F1), share your feedback and suggestions via the smiley face, or just want to give us a shout on Twitter, we’re always listening and looking for ways to reach out wherever our users feel most comfortable and prefer to talk to us. We’re all ears!

Thank you for being here. We look forward to listening and engaging with you.

Hi Erik,

I'm going to address your 2 comments separately.

1. Pinned tabs should be saved in case of an unexpected shutdown
This 1 has me scratching my head.  The point of pinning is the item is attached to the taskbar until & unless the End User unpins it.  Pin items do not disappear due to a shut-down, be it planned or unplanned.

2. Edge C does not show up in the history time line

No, it doesn't, if you are talking about Windows 10 Timeline.; at least, not by default.  It will, once Edge C is 'embedded' in Win10 (instead, of Edge).  However, in the meantime, they CAN work together by grabbing an extension.  Can say, from 1st hand use, it works nicely.  It can be found HERE

Cheers,
Drew

Most important Points for me is Usability and Design.

The Fluent Design is used with all Microsoft apps quite inconsistant and this dev is not different. Header is not transparent - rounded Corners vs. hard edges, rounded highligt bars vs. highlight blocks with hard edges.

The journey to the final Fluent Design seems a neverending Story, but it comes with the price of losing usabilty.

Thanks for taking care!

@Elliot Kirk

Presúvanie položiek v "Obľúbené položky" nefunguje dobre. Položky zmizne, odchádzajúci len biela plocha. (Microsoft Edge DEV).

@Elliot Kirk

Below is a list of the things that I would like edge chromium have:

Personalize edge with themes (Chrome store?)
Possibility to use my own image in new tab page
Fully customizable toolbar (add or remove items)
Save webpage screenshot or part of it as an image
Phishing and malware protection
Download manager
Built-in VPN

I want to point out that I´m no expert, only a regular user, so I don´t know if some or all the things above mentioned have been or are going to be implemented.

Thanks.

@Elliot Kirk  I would love to see where you can put in an permanent exceptions for internal website that is have a self signed cert.

@josegime47

Hi Jose,

Your note caught my eye.  I'm sure Elliot will have more to say, but, I'd like to just touch on a couple of your items.

"Toolbar items, Add/Remove - this can be applied, now in regard to extensions' icons.  The "Show in toolbar" has not been put in Edge C., yet. But, the items in it have not been put in yet, either.  And that includes Add notes which, is your next item...

Saving parts of a site - That is Add notes.  As far as we know, now, all these things are coming.

NB: In the meantime (or anytime), the same can be done with Snip & Sketch.

Phishing & malware protect, already, exist and (Edge C.) will work with WS, same as Edge once, we have converted.

Cheers,
Drew

@Drew1903  In Edge C on the favourites bar, the folder icons are just outlined against the grey background. It's been like this for a few weeks over various updates. Here's what I'm seeing:

Grey Favourites Bar.jpg

Any ideas? Thanks!

@Pete_FFC

Hi Pete,

Not sure how you inserted the images, but, they don't display.  Please, redo them.  Save your snips & hit Photos (here) on the message toolbar & insert thusly.  Once I see them, I'll be able to comment effectively.  Thanks.

Cheers,
Drew

@Drew1903  Hope you can see this?Grey Favourites Bar.jpg

@Pete_FFC

Pete, still, gives this ⬇, same as before...

As before.jpg

Use Snip & Sketch in Rectangle Mode to grab the image, save it & use the :camera: Photos insert tool to put it here.

Drew

the newest version of edge dev has no ie mode suddenly;

@lengfeng

I just checked & it's gone from Canary, also.  Flags enabled in both, but, gone in ellipsis.  We best report it :)

@Drew1903

Thanks,  it's what I use: Snip & Sketch. I was referring to something wnthin the browser.

@Elliot Kirk

Favorites don't work properly. A clean white surface appears.

@josegime47

"referring to something within the browser"

Jose,

I am & was aware of that.  I am led to believe Add notes will be in Edge C eventually.

Drew

@dokopy

Please provide a screen shot or snip so can 'see' better the what & where.  Have you submitted it to Mr. Smiley? Everything with Favorites seems fine & normal on my systems.  Anxious for the pictures. Thanks.

@Elliot Kirk

The new Chrominium Edge sucks as much as the original one.

Cannot set French as language

Everything displays in English even if French is the only language set

Some web pages don't display as good as with Chrome or Firefox

Easy, if you do not like it, do not use it.

@Elliot Kirk can you add the date of the Dev Build to the dev build number, and a link to the version history?

Hello!

I've tested the browser and it is really fast and unique. It is better than the previous one but setting tabs aside and asking Cortana is missing. I found those features useful so could you add them please?

Not only that but other things such as taking notes, reading lists are also missing. Otherwise, very impressive.

Thanks for making the browser better
