Roadmap for PDF reader in Microsoft Edge
Over the course of last year, we worked hard on building a powerful PDF reader that offers compatibility, reliability, and security for you and your organization. The feedback we received from you from the Edge Insider builds has been really encouraging, and here are some of the most asked features that are available today, across Windows, Mac, and Linux: Reading and Navigation: Table of Contents enables you to view the contents of PDF files and navigate to different parts seamlessly, improving your productivity. Page view enables you to view the PDF file in a book format, with the option to view the cover page separately. Caret mode lets you navigate through your PDF files and select text directly through your keyboard by enabling Caret mode by pressing F7. Accessibility support including keyboard accessibility, screen reader support, and capability to view PDFs in high contrast mode. Fill basic PDF forms directly in the browser. (Please note that XFA forms are currently not supported) Annotation tools: Ink on PDF files with colors and stroke width of your choice. Text notes can be added quickly to text in the file to jot down thoughts for easy reference later. Create highlights with Highlight mode enables you to draw attention to parts of the PDF that you find interesting. With Highlight mode, you can now create highlights directly by selecting text, as you would do with a highlighter and paper. In-context annotations opens a quick menu right when you select text on PDF files, enabling you to take quick actions as highlight, copy without losing context. Enterprise and Education: Read Aloud is now supported on PDF documents. You can use it either to retain focus while reading through it or to listen to PDF documents while multitasking! Dictionary and search through in-context menu keeps helps you understand the content and research better, while keeping you in context. Open Microsoft Information Protection (MIP) and Information Rights Management (IRM) protected PDFs and view permissions seamlessly within Microsoft Edge, without the need of any add-ins. MIP adds a layer of security to your documents. It ensures that only the users who have certain permissions such as view, copy, annotate can take those actions on the file. Hence, no matter where the document goes, the data of your organization remains secure. Viewing MIP files protected in other tenants: This will enable you to view the files protected in other organizations, or in other tenants in the organization. Certificate based Digital Signatures, which is currently under preview allows you to view and validate digital signatures present on PDF documents directly in the browser. Here are the features we’re currently working on: View recovery: On re-opening a PDF file, reach your last-read location easily. File preview of PDF files in File Explorer and Outlook Add text box annotations: Add text boxes to fill forms, or take notes on PDFs Validate Certificate based Digital Signatures: We’re currently working on adding support for signatures with long-term validity. Further down the line: Viewing labels of protected files Digital Signatures: Validating ETSI signatures Add Digital Signatures Accessibility improvements: Advanced capability to fill forms and navigate through a PDF document using screen readers. We are actively looking at feedback from you about the features you find important. Please feel free to comment below or submit detailed feedback through the browser by going to " ... menu > Help and feedback > Send feedback”.Aditi_GangwarOct 22, 2025Microsoft70KViews25likes126CommentsAdd Text to your PDF documents
We have received a lot of love from you ever since we started our journey of building a PDF reader that addresses all your annotations and form fill needs. Taking another step towards fulfilling that goal, we are now introducing a feature that lets you add text directly to your PDF documents. Do you remember the last time you encountered that annoying PDF document that was meant to be a form but had no editable fields? We are now bringing an end to all your form filling woes with the ‘Add text’ feature that lets you add text to the document with customizable font size, color, and spacing options. All you need to do is click on the button in the toolbar and place the cursor anywhere on the document to add the text box and start typing. You can also click on ‘Add text’ in the right click menu anywhere on the document to add a text box. Try it to out type in text and take notes on top and in the margins of the PDF documents you are reading! Once you have placed the text box, you can change the font color, size and text spacing through the mini menu attached to the textbox. The default font size is set to 12px which you can increase up to 48px or decrease up to 9px. The default color is set to blue you can change to black, green, or red based on what you need that day. To make your form filling experience even smoother, we retain the last textbox format set by you for as long as your PDF document is open. You can now use this tool to fill in forms or add visible notes to your PDF documents. This feature is currently present in our Canary and Dev channels and supports these languages: English, Spanish, Dutch, French, Italian, Afrikaans, Albanian, Basque, Bosnian, Catalan, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Estonian, Filipino, Finnish, Galician, Hungarian, Icelandic, German, Indonesian, Irish, Lithuanian, Luxembourgish, Malay, Norwegian, Portuguese, Romanian, Scottish Gaelic, Slovak, Slovenian, Swedish, Turkish, Vietnamese and Welsh. Let us know how you use the annotations tools present in the Microsoft Edge PDF reader today and any other tools you would like to see. Share your feedback with us and tell us how you are using this new tool. Go to “…” menu > Help and feedback > Send feedback, or simply use the shortcut (Shift+Alt+I) to open the feedback tool and share your thoughts with this.posinhaOct 16, 2025Microsoft51KViews14likes33CommentsQuickly share links with yourself or others with the new share menu
People share links with family, friends, and coworkers every day, but sharing is often more complex and frustrating than it should be due to seemingly unnecessary steps and options. Today, we’re excited to share (pardon the pun) what we’re doing to improve this experience with the new share menu in Microsoft Edge. Share to Outlook, Gmail, Facebook, Twitter, and more With the new share menu, it’s easy to share links via your favorite services, from email to social networks. Best of all, you don’t need to install an app or set up anything for it to work. Simply select a service to open the site in a new tab, making it easy to quickly add some thoughts, tag a friend, or select a private group to share with. The initial list of supported services includes Outlook, Gmail, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp, and we will continue to add additional services in the coming weeks and months. To start sharing, open the Settings and More menu ( ) and select Share. Want to share a link via an app on your computer or to a nearby device? Just select More sharing options to open the native share menu on Windows or macOS. You can also share to your default email client using the Default mail app button as well. Share with yourself We’ve also heard that sharing isn’t just for sending content to other people. Sometimes you just need to send something to yourself so you can refer back to it later. Email is a very common way of doing this, but many users often admit to feeling embarrassed about sending themselves an email rather than using more efficient tools. We want to embrace this in Microsoft Edge and help you be more productive no matter what organizational system you use. To share with yourself, you can add one or more Outlook or Gmail accounts in the Email to myself section. Once you’ve selected a service and entered your email address, clicking on the account will instantly compose a new email and pre-populate your account in the To line—all you need to do is click send. We hope this will save you time and help you remember something later in just a few clicks. This is just the beginning of our journey to make sharing faster and easier than ever in Microsoft Edge. The new Share menu is currently rolling out to users in the Canary and Dev channels. In the next few days, we'll also be adding a Microsoft Edge share menu flag in Canary for those of you who don't want to wait. Please let us know what you think of the new share menu in the comments below, as well as via the in-app feedback tool. Have a favorite service you’d like us to support? We’d love to hear that as well. Happy sharing! — William Devereux, Senior Program Manager, Microsoft EdgeWilliam DevereuxJul 24, 2025Microsoft41KViews15likes44CommentsMicrosoft Edge extends tools for the PDF reader
The integrated PDF reader in the legacy Microsoft Edge browser is deeply loved by many of you and we have been getting feedback about the availability of those features in the new version of Microsoft Edge. We are working on adding your favorite annotations tools to the PDF reader in Microsoft Edge right now and wanted to provide you an update on our work. Inking on PDF files Today you can use built-in inking tools when you open PDF files in the new Microsoft Edge. This allows you to take notes, fill out and sign PDF forms. Click on the Draw button from the toolbar to start writing; you can use a digital pen, touch or a mouse. You can use the Erase button to start erasing the strokes. If you are using a digital pen with a back-button, you can use that to erase while in draw mode. We have also added the ability to change the color and width of the lines you are drawing. To open the new customization panel, just click or tap the " “ button attached to the Draw tool. This new color and stroke width selector are already available in the Canary and Dev channels and will make their way to the Stable channel in Microsoft Edge version 83. Text highlight support Highlighting important text while reading PDFs is a very common activity especially for students reading books or research papers in PDF format. We have added the ability to highlight text in PDF files. You can access this feature today in the Canary, Dev and Beta channels via the context menu. Just select any piece of text on a PDF document that you want to highlight, right click to invoke the context menu and you will find the option to highlight the text. You can even choose from four different colors for the highlighters. We will continue to improve the highlighting experience in PDF by making it accessible directly from the PDF toolbar. Click or tap Highlight in the toolbar to get started. Then use your digital pen or mouse over the text you want to highlight. You can also change the color of the highlight by clicking the " “ button attached to the Highlight tool. This will open a color panel where you can select the color of your choice. The highlight tool is available in the PDF toolbar in Canary and Dev channels. You can expect to see it roll out to more channels in upcoming releases. What’s next We know that many of you love the PDF reader in Microsoft Edge and we’ve heard a lot of feedback and requests for annotations support. We will be working on improving the ability to do light editing on PDF files which would make you productive right within the browser. As part of this effort, the team will be working on these scenarios: Improving the experience of reading text notes already present in a PDF. Ability to add text notes on a PDF. Let us know in what scenarios you use annotations on PDFs and what kind of toolset you would want to see in Microsoft Edge PDF reader. This would help us expand the range of tools we have for PDFs with what is most important for you.Elliot KirkJul 07, 2025Former Employee148KViews18likes80CommentsDev Channel update to 137.0.3255.0 is live.

Today, we’re launching an experience experiment for sites or Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) that are installed as apps on your desktop. This is on by default if you are using Windows 10 version 2004 or newer. If you install the same site or PWA on more than one Edge profile, we’ve introduced a profile switcher on the application title bar to switch between profiles from within your app. With this experiment, you’ll only see one application tile in Windows for that application. Also, when the application starts, it uses the last profile used by the application. To switch between profiles in your application, perform the following steps: 1. Locate the profile icon on the title bar of your application, and select it. 2. Now, simply select the other profile to use. 3. Confirm that a second application window starts with the selected profile. Note: The profile switcher in the title bar only displays when you have the same app installed on more than one profile. We’re looking for feedback on this feature. Here are a couple of questions for you: Do you prefer to have your app display as one application in Windows, and switch using this experimental method described above? Do you prefer to have distinct applications installed on Windows for each profile you install the app with? This would mean you could have multiple application tiles/icons in Start, the Taskbar or on your desktop. Would you prefer to choose your default profile each time you install a new application? We’d love to hear from you. Please send feedback using the “Send Feedback” feature (Alt + Shift + I) from within Microsoft Edge.josh_bodnerMar 26, 2025Former Employee9.9KViews6likes8CommentsDev Channel update to 136.0.3193.0 is live.
