Outlook keeps asking for password
Hi, we are having an issue with Outlook with an Office365 account on some user. the password prompt are keep on showing.
I tried running SARA, update windows 10 and office apps, create new profile, remove all credentials from credential manager, do the registry thing, disable antivirus but everything does not work.
- Ok so now I tried the same registry settings on a computer with Office 2016 and IT WORKS!
Oh course I had to change for version 16 in the registry.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\AlwaysUseMSOAuthForAutoDiscover REG_DWORD 1
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Identity\EnableADAL REG_DWORD 1
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Identity\Version REG_DWORD 1

- mprcelCopper ContributorI might be way off here lads but has this really got anything to do with Modern Auth. Only reason I say it is because it;s affecting 4 of our users that are all on diff machines (diff makes and models) and if I log into another machine as one of them, it loads fine. One of our guys actually has a laptop and desktop, one works, the other doesn't, both are up to date Win10 and Office ...... it has to be a corrupt profile setting or something.
- mprcelCopper ContributorHey Jeesoon,
I'm having exactly the same issue with 4 of our 80 users. I've done everything that you have as well and been on to MS who have done the same. No reason for it to happen to us either ..... - MathieuVandenHautteSteel ContributorHi Jeesoo,
Make sure that modern authentication is enabled on the tenant:
Microsoft 365 admin center > Settings > Org Settings > Modern Authentication.
If the key HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\Identity\EnableADAL exists than the DWORD has to be set to 1 (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/troubleshoot/administration/modern-authentication-configuration)
If these solutions don't work, try to create a new Windows user profile.- mprcelCopper Contributor
Yeah, I've done all of them. Not your fault I know, this is my MS rant bit .... I just don't understand that when it happens to multiple users at the same time why recreate the profile is an MS solution. Something has obviously changed in MS otherwise it would only be a 1 user isolated incident, corrupt profile etc .... very frustrating .....

mprcel I have the same problem. I have limited it to one problem or two problems. So same user same computer on domain gets Microsoft security password endless cycle. Login to same computer as a local admin not on domain and it loads fine. Can not remove mail profile due to endless cycle of password. Could be something to do with Microsoft security and credential manager.
- JeesoonCopper ContributorModern Auth is enabled ever since our tenant goes live.
EnableADAL does not exist i created it still does not work. instead of 15.0 i use 16.0
sorry but creating a new user profile is not the best solution for our case, we have 7 users out of 86 and some of this users are 4 hours away from our office. we are on 3 different sites. - Rob NicholsonBrass Contributor
MathieuVandenHautte life-saver! I'd found this registry entry but the page I'd found said it had to be set to 0 not 1 - doh! Not sure WHY this key hasn't made it into some of my client's computers. Caused all sorts of hassle today as basic authentication was disabled.
- Joe88Copper ContributorWhat Outlook version?
- mprcelCopper Contributor2209
- mprcelCopper ContributorHave also performed the below after running MS SARA and sending diags to MS:
To further troubleshoot this support request, kindly refer to the below steps:
• HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Exchange >> Create a DWORD Value >> AlwaysUseMSOAuthForAutoDiscover >> set the value to 1
If the issue persists, please re-install office for the user:
• Uninstall office from Control Panel
• Navigate to Regedit and Delete the folder office from the file path \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
• Also delete the folder office from the file path \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
• Delete Office and Outlook folder from this location: C:\Users\(User)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\
• Also delete Office and Outlook folder from this location: C:\Users\(User)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\
• Download the office apps from portal
• Configure outlook profile again
Still the same .......

- stefanlithenCopper ContributorWe have the same issue with some of our users/computers in the domain.
We have also tried most of what we could find on internet to solve the issue.
This also started last week so I think it's an windows update that has caused this.
It's on both windows 10 and windows 11 machines.- mprcelCopper ContributorHey Guys,
MS actually sent me this on friday:
Please be informed that the usually when users get this windows security pop up in outlook, the step to resolve this is to create the below registry key
• HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft >Office > 16.0 >Common > Identity > created a new REG_DWORD >EnableADAL set value to 1
• HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft >Office > 16.0 >Common > Identity > created a new REG_DWORD >DisableADALatopWAMOverride, set value to 1
• HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft >Office > 16.0 >Common > Identity > created a new REG_DWORD >DisableAADWam set value to 1
In the scenario when this doesn't work and the mailbox is working on another Pc, this usually means the issue is with the Windows.
There's no backend diagnostics to confirm why this is happening as we only see issues with the mailbox and not the PC.
Marvellous eh ??- JeesoonCopper ContributorDoes not work.
- JeesoonCopper Contributori tried random checking on problematic and non-problematic users. the version of windows and outlook, some of them have similar windows version but few only encounter the problem.
- mprcelCopper ContributorBTW, I agree. I do think something updated. It's too coincidental that 4 of ours were all affected within the same day ... nothing had changed.
- SnejProCopper ContributorI have the same issue since one or two weeks with Outlook and Exchange 2019 behind an Apache reverse proxy.
Recreating the profiles and setting the registry keys did not work.- mprcelCopper ContributorHey SnejPro, if it's of any use. The only things that I did do that may have helped was:
I checked that the only key in: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Exchange]
Was: "AlwaysUseMSOAuthForAutodiscover"=dword:00000001
I cleared out the Mapi keys if there were any ....
Then depending on the version of Outlook installed I also deleted the following:
Deleted the entire Identity folder from: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\
ie:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\Identity
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Identity
After that, disabling MFA for the affected user and trying to run Outlook and then re-enabling MFA seemed to kick it in.
This info was pulled in from all of the users in this thread, I can't take any credit for it ....- Jim_PotterCopper Contributor
This worked for me, more or less. I added theAlwaysUseMSOAuthForAutodiscover key, deleted MAPI keys, and deleted Identity folder as mprcel suggests. Then I used Control Panel/Mail to create a new temporary profile. Then opened Outlook using the original profile & all is well. Didn't need to disable/reenable MFA.

Jeesoon Hey there , I want to share with you the most stupid way ever to fix Outlook 365 (latest preview build of MAfB v2303) asking for password....
Today, all of a sudden, the prompt (Windows Security) popped out asking for password. I ticked remember, entered the password, clicked OK. It asked again for password... I entered again, then the Autodiscover (certificate window) appeared i clicked Yes... Spent the next 4h trying to fix, using regedit, all the possible tips & tricks to overcome the issue. Also created new Win user profile, in which it worked flawlessly... switch back to main user account, tried the store app Mail, it worked, no issues there...
And as i was getting ready to give up... I remembered there is an option "Try the new Outlook" (top right corner under X to close Outlook 365 for Desktop)... I did, it downloaded new ver. asked me to Switch, so i clicked on it as well... Waited for it to import settings and preferences... and bam! no password prompt.
Microsoft, seriously what the hell is going on? If anyone knows what does this have to do with anything please explain...- Antrophin3Copper Contributor
Antrophin3 Also in addition to that possible fix of trying the new outlook design...
I have also applied the 3 .reg edits, switched back to standard Outlook, and voila... works again. Thanks so much for these @OP.Here is the code to make the .reg file (in Notepad). Just copy and paste it to new Notepad document, and save it as "LoginFix.reg" or however you wish...
