Fingerprint Login No Longer Working
Login with Fingerprint is no longer working after the latest Windows 11, 25H2 update. It recognizes my fingerprint but immediately says "your pin is required to sign in". I have removed my fingerprint and PIN, restarted the computer, re-added the PIN and fingerprint, but continue to experience the same issue. The issue started after the most recent round of updates. KB5066835, KB5066128, and KB5068331 were installed. I removed KB5066835 and the functionality returned to normal. Anyone else experiencing this issue?JoeSOct 24, 2025Occasional Reader28Views0likes1CommentWindows 11 on a laptop with 8GB RAM
I have an older laptop (XPS 13 around 2018, i5 8250u and 8GB RAM) and unfortunately I will probably have to switch it from Win10 where it runs perfectly on windows 11. The problem is that, in the past when W11 had just appeared, I upgraded it and it runs like crap because of the RAM (which is soldered to the motherboard without an upgrade, thanks Dell fmm). The processor is still decent, I have a SFF Dell with a 7th gen i5 that runs ok, so it is not limited because of this. Those of you who are still on the forum here with W11 on 8GB RAM, what tweaks have you made to the system/settings to make it run as well as possible? (a balance between look/performance, I wouldn't want to turn off all the animations either) It is no longer my main laptop, but I still don't think I would leave it on a system that will no longer receive updates - especially security updates.HouellebecqOct 24, 2025Iron Contributor43Views0likes1CommentStart menu disappearing after a few second or before if clicked on
Had the problem as above after years without anything significant. Right click menu on the start button continued to work just fine as did everything else as far as I could tell. Logs showed nothing useful (to me). I tried searching on here with no success but I will admit that's probably my fault. Anyway, I remembered some posts suggesting repair update as a solution for some problems so I did the using WU but nothing changed so in the end I just restored the C: drive from a Macrium backup and that sorted it but I'm left wondering what caused it. It wasn't after an update and I hadn't done anything that might have caused it. I was surprised the repair didn't correct it so I'm wondering what was different in the full restore that sorted a system problem.MoenllyOct 24, 2025Iron Contributor16Views0likes1CommentUnexpected Shutdown Caused by Windows Update, but there's been no Updates?
I don't have any issue just trying to learn from the event viewer exactly what happened and if i am interpreting this correctly. I put my computer to sleep yesterday around 4:28pm, and just a few minutes later it appears at 4:30pm it shut off? If Im reading that right. It appears it was caused by windows update client, but i have no recent updates installed. Did the shutdown happen yesterday after I put it to sleep, or did it happen today when I tried to wake it from sleep?HolawayOct 24, 2025Iron Contributor38Views0likes1CommentBlack Screen.....What's going on here?
I’ve been having a weird issue with my PC. It randomly goes to a black screen while I’m browsing the internet or doing other light tasks, but the system doesn’t completely shut down — the CPU and GPU fans keep spinning. I have to do a hard reset to get it working again. What’s confusing is that it never happens while I’m gaming or doing anything intensive. I’ve already tried reinstalling Windows, but that didn’t solve the issue. Temps seem normal and nothing is overclocked.VaughnRamseyOct 24, 2025Iron Contributor30Views0likes1CommentStart menu "Best Match" allowing access to run command
We operate an educational network of PCs which we restrict quite strictly to prevent students accessing certain programs. We use a number of group policy settings already to restrict the command prompt, hide or restrict certain drives and prevent access to the run command (via right click on start button and within the start menu). However, the recent updates to the start menu in Windows 11 allow users to search (and run) applications and network UNC paths, which they previously wouldn't have access to. We have found that the "Best Match" on the start menu search, allows users to open UNC paths to servers which are normally blocked by group policy when keying in to the address bar in explorer. Disabling the run command has always been effective at preventing apps being run which we don't directly present in the past. This creates a bit of a vulnerability for us as we need to run as tight a setup as possible to prevent students tampering. We need students to be able to write to shares, but we don't want them to be able to browse directly to the root of server shares (even if the permissions are tight around the shares). The only way we've found to prevent access to this is to fully disable the search UI. As this policy is a computer policy we cannot disable this for only certain users which is frustrating. The DisableSearchBoxSuggestions setting has no effect on the "Best Match" suggestion. We feel that Microsoft need to address this issue, as being able to prevent access to the "run" command is important to many Network Admins in Education.gdarockdjOct 24, 2025Copper Contributor41Views0likes1CommentWhat’s the best YouTube video summarizer right now?
Hey folks — I’m drowning in long vids and need something that can spit out solid summaries (key points + timestamps) without me watching 2 hours every time. Ideally it should work from the URL, handle videos with or without captions, and not cost a fortune. What are you using that actually works? Bonus points if it supports chapter-aware summaries, exports (TXT/Markdown), and lets me choose length (TL;DR vs detailed). I’m on Windows + Chrome, open to extensions, web apps, or CLI tools. Real-world recs only, please!LeiaKnOct 24, 2025Iron Contributor63Views1like6CommentsUpgrade to windows 11 Pro from unlicensed Home version
Hi I have build a computer and I downloaded unlicensed Windows 11 Home to a usb drive (from microsoft) and installed it as operative system. Then my manager bought a 11 pro license key (misunderstood each other) instead of windows 11 home license key. Now I try to write in the 11 pro license key but it doesn't work. I get an error message when I push next. I thought it would upgrade to pro automatically. So my question is: does this not work? what should I do? I don't want to reformat the computer since I have bought office package and another program.vegg92Oct 24, 2025Copper Contributor39KViews4likes14CommentsSetting Up Windows 11 for the First Time 15 Things You Should Do
