Design Topology:

  • Illustrates the domain controller setup before and after migration, emphasizing the introduction of a Windows Server 2022 domain controller.

Preparing the New Windows Server 2022 Domain Controller:

  • Guides the process of preparing the new server, including joining it to the existing domain and verifying SYSVOL replication.

Adding the New Windows Server 2022 Domain Controller:

  • Explains how to add the new server as an additional domain controller using PowerShell, ensuring DNS integration.

FSMO Role Migration:

  • Details the migration of FSMO roles from the old Windows Server 2008 R2 domain controller to the new Windows Server 2022 domain controller using PowerShell commands.

Decommissioning the Old Domain Controller:

  • Outlines the steps to decommission the old Windows Server 2008 R2 domain controller using the dcpromo wizard.

Raising Domain and Forest Functional Levels:

  • Provides PowerShell commands to raise the domain and forest functional levels to Windows Server 2016 or later after decommissioning the old domain controller.

Verification:

  • Suggests commands to verify the success of the migration, including checking domain and forest functional levels, FSMO roles, and the list of domain controllers.

The article concludes by emphasizing that the same steps can be applied when migrating from Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2, 2016, or 2019 to Windows Server 2022.
