I am trying to find a means to learn if a remote computer is Mac, Linux or windows from the computer name.

Any suggestions?

Hello @dcazman,

It would be very hard nearly it impossible to get/guess OS of the computer based on name.

Unless your organization use some type of naming conventions and includes OSName as part of computer name.

Can you please elaborate and explain your use case?

One of the options would be to use NMAP and scan computer to identify it's OS via OS fingerprinting.

Hope that helps.
