Next week is an internal Microsoft conference for field technical people – TechReady 11. I’m presenting a couple of sessions on migrating from Internet Explorer 6 to Internet Explorer 8, a session on debugging and fixing Win32 applications, and my (now infamous) Not for the Faint of Heart: Hard Core App Compat Debugging session. The session began with just me. A couple of conferences ago, I invited Gov Maharaj (a developer from the core app compat team on Windows) who wields a debugger like few others can, and it was a huge hit. We’ve repeated that one a couple of times now. So, this time around, I signed the two of us up again. But, alas, Gov is going to be on vacation. So, I had to think of a plan B. Rather than being mundane, I figured I’d just ask one of the greatest app compat debuggers who has ever existed: Raymond Chen. (Yes, he writes some pretty sweet code too, but lots of people write sweet code. Not many people are that handy with debuggers. That’s why I love our Escalation Engineers and PFEs and work so hard to get this session into the conference so they can enjoy it.) Of course, now Raymond is suggesting that he was an also-ran . That couldn’t be further from the truth! To use a golf analogy, I have a pretty low handicap, but I still miss quite a few putts. Gov is my buddy with the 0 handicap, who I bring along as my ringer. Raymond is like Tiger Woods (without the scandals). If Tiger agrees to play with you, you don’t want to push your luck by calling him every time you go to the course. You call him when you really want to win! If you are a Microsoft employee, and are fortunate enough to be coming to TechReady (unfortunately, since it’s a Chalk Talk, it won’t be webcast), come and join us for debugging awesomeness.
