The Linux operating system support in System Center Operations Manager has expanded – yet again. :)    A Microsoft partner, NiCE, is now offering a management pack for Linux running on IBM System z.   So in addition to monitoring Linux running on x86/x64 hardware or hypervisors, you can now use OpsMgr to monitor Linux running on your IBM mainframe!  And the results show up in your OpsMgr console, right alongside your Windows servers and your x86/x64 Linux servers.

The OpsMgr agent for Linux on x86/x64 is based on an open source CIM server (Open Management Infrastructure, or OMI) plus a set of providers implemented by Microsoft.  OMI is an open source project hosted by The Open Group , and the source code for the Microsoft providers is available on CodePlex .  So NiCE was able to take this source code, compile it for the IBM System z with minimal changes, and produce an OpsMgr agent that runs on Linux for System z.  Because this agent comes from the same source code, it provides the same monitoring functionality as the OpsMgr agent for Linux on x86/x64 architectures.

You can get more information about this new offering from NiCE on their web site .
