We have new updates for Surface 3 devices.

Starting this month, you may also notice a new file naming structure for these updates. With more and more customers choosing Surface for their organizations, we’re making this change to provide a consistent customer experience across multiple release mechanisms (like Windows Update and DLC). You’ll start to notice this name change this month on some devices, with others to follow in the coming weeks.

Click the headings below to go to the specific location for your device on the Download Center. At the Download Center, click Details then click + More to see all available downloads for the device. For all devices you can follow the similar deployment process that is used for Surface Pro 3 described at Surface TechCenter .

Updates for Surface 3 devices

For all Surface 3 devices, updates will be posted at https://aka.ms/drivers/surface3 .

Please note that the Surface3 MSI will require a reboot. The reboot is required to complete installation of drivers and firmware. We recommend IT administrators to enforce reboot as quickly as possible after deploying the MSI; not rebooting the device will leave it in an unstable state.

  • If you execute the MSI without the /quiet and /norestart switch  (for example, if you execute the MSI manually on a device), you will see both dialog boxes in the screenshot in Figure.

  • If you execute the MSI with the /quiet switch (for example, if it is executed by a system management tool), you will still see the second dialog box in the screenshot in Figure 1.

IT administrators could force a restart using the shutdown /r command, make that quiet, show the user a custom message, and control the time until it restarts, for example, or they could use another restart method that they prefer.
