SharePoint Online licencing external users

Copper Contributor

We are running the project of publishing the knowledge base to our trading partners and customers. All the documents are stored on SharePoint site. We have a partner/customer portal build on foundation of SalesForce and we are planning to use Salesforce Files Connect to display the documents from SharePoint in our portal. So finally the external users will have access the SharePoint content using thrid party application and not SharePoint/Office 365 user interface.

Do we need any licence for customers in this scenario or can we assume that sharing with external users is free as in case of sharing using Office 365/Sharepoint user interface?

Is there any licencing guideline/document where we can check this scenario?

You are basically correct: external users can access your SPO Sites without requiring a SPO licenese.
