Mac: OneDrive Couldn't Start: Please restart your computer and try again

When OneDrive updated on 9/11, with build 26158.0816, I started to get this error:

OneDrive Couldn't Start:  Please restart your computer and try again. Error codes: FilterStatus::-3 (0xfffffffd) [Permanent] [SyncRootManagerTools.cpp:128 `Odfs::Fs::CommonPlaceholders::CommonSyncRootRegisterVnop`]

I have powered off my Mac and rebooted.  Restarting OneDrive does nothing.  It keeps giving me this error and as a result, I also cannot live edit docs using the thick clients (Word, Excel, etc).  Files I have modified with them are stuck on my Mac.

I am looking for tips.  Please do not ask me to unlink/de-register all of my Onedrive sync'd shares.

I'm actively dealing with the same issue. This started right around Sep 10th or so.

I think I found a solve but you might not like it: READ THIS ALL BEFORE TRYING IT

Use Activity Monitor to close our of all OneDrive stuff. Navigate to One Drive in your finder window, right click and show package contents, click Contents, click Resources. Then I opened the RemoveOneDriveCreds.command then I ran the ResetOneDriveApp Standalone.command scripts.

Warning: this looks like it does remove / delete the sync completely. So the OneDrive folder will disappear from your finder window. If you've been using your OneDrive folders even while you've had this syncing issue, I'm fairly certain you will lose these unsynced files. BACK UP YOUR STUFF. Anything you worked on while OneDrive has been failing you'll probably lose.

I just went through this process. It removed all the OneDrive folders from my machine but OneDrive is running now. I went onto OneDrive.com and set the folders to sync and they're now downloading onto my computer again.

  • Same here, onedrive for my company is not working anymore 😠. Private one is running ok.

Please restart your computer and try again. Error codes: FilterStatus::-3 (0xfffffffd) [Permanent] [SyncRootManagerTools.cpp:128 `Odfs::Fs::CommonPlaceholders::CommonSyncRootRegisterVnop`]

Maybe to do with update of MacOS?? I am running: 26.6.2 (25G83) on a MacBook Pro Apple M1 Pro

I rebooted and then my Mac came up and allowed me to re-link.  However that appears to have only activated my user OneDrive.  My 'sync'ed Onedrives are not working.  :/. It throws the same kind of error message above but instead of being "OneDrive", it's whatever MS Teams/Sharepoint share I try to resync.

I tried to unlink and re-link.  Got this:

Funny thing:  the video doesn't work, provides no way to give feedback that the article isn't helpful/broken.  Yes, I saw the text below but whatever video doesn't exist anymore.
