Automating Power BI Viewer Role Assignment After Azure Purview Approval
Hello everyone! In my organization we use Azure Purview to manage access requests for our Power BI reports. Our current flow is: A user requests access to a data product (Power BI report) from Purview. I approve the request in the Purview portal. Although the user now has metadata-level access in Purview, to actually view the report they must click “Open in Power BI (Fabric)”—and that only works if I manually add them as Viewer to the workspace or app. This manual step is very tedious when there are dozens of requests per day. I’m looking for ideas to automate it so that, upon approval in Purview, the user is granted the Viewer role on the Power BI workspace/app for that report without any manual intervention. Has anyone implemented something similar or knows of an out-of-the-box approach? Perhaps a Purview extension (even in preview), third-party tool, or community solution that automates this provisioning? Thanks in advance for any pointers or examples!SolvedNai_edodoMay 07, 2025Copper Contributor251Views0likes5CommentsAnalyze Metadata for All Unstructured Files in SharePoint and OneDrive Using Microsoft Services
Hi everyone, I’m trying to find a reliable way to collect and analyze metadata for all unstructured files across our Microsoft 365 tenant — specifically in SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business. The metadata we’re interested in includes: File creation date File size File type or extension The goal is to get comprehensive view across our entire Microsoft tenant to help us implement retention policies and labels accordingly Ideally, we’d like to do this using Microsoft Purview or any other Microsoft-native service or tool. We’re open to using Graph API, Power BI, Defender for Cloud Apps, or other reporting/export tools if necessary. Has anyone done this successfully? If so, what was your approach, and what tools or scripts did you use? Any advice or recommendations would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance.SolvedkumbhajMay 02, 2025Copper Contributor189Views0likes1CommentUnexpected re-activation of "Schedule Refresh" in Health Controls
As you may be aware, using "Schedule refresh" in Health Controls incurs costs. For this reason, I had disabled the refresh some time ago. However, I have now observed for the second time via the Azure cost overview that this setting was overwritten. I suspect this may be related to a deployment. In our case, I am the only one with the rights to make such changes, so I can rule out manual interference by someone else. I first noticed the issue through Azure, as costs were incurred again. Additionally, within Purview under "Schedule refresh", I observed that the settings seemed to have reverted to default — specifically, the time zone field was no longer populated. To stop the costs and disable the refresh again, I first had to reselect a time zone before I could disable the schedule refresh. I have already opened a case with Microsoft on this issue (ID: 2504100050001847), but I also want to raise awareness among other users so this behavior can be checked on their end as well.SolvedFlorianAApr 30, 2025Copper Contributor101Views0likes1CommentRequest for Direct Access to Power BI Reports via Data Products
We would like to use data products to provide a report catalog for our business users. Currently, this is rather cumbersome, as accessing the links to individual assets (specifically Power BI reports) via data products requires multiple steps. It would be very helpful if assets could be opened directly from the data product interface. As an alternative, links could potentially be managed via custom attributes, although this might not be the most elegant solution. According to the roadmap, custom attributes for business concepts are planned to be in Public Preview in April 2025. Since April is almost over, could you please provide an update on when this feature will become available?SolvedFlorianAApr 29, 2025Copper Contributor116Views0likes1CommentUnity Catalog Scans for Feature Store
Hello, Does Purview's Unity Catalog connector support Feature Store objects? https://docs.databricks.com/aws/en/machine-learning/feature-store/uc/feature-tables-uc https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/purview/register-scan-azure-databricks-unity-catalog?tabs=MI It does not explicitly say Feature Store is supported but I'm unsure if these will be scanned as tables.SolvedSovApr 10, 2025Copper Contributor83Views0likes1CommentUnified Catalog and connection to AWS and GCP
Hi, I recently came across an article by Keshav Singh (on Medium), which discusses the use of Microsoft Fabric to unlock the Unified Catalog Governance and Data Management features when connecting to Amazon S3. Is this additional layer of Fabric necessary, or can the same features be accessed directly through Purview’s connection to S3? Hi Purview Community, Further to scanning Fabric in purview, Delta Lake tables are showing up as assets in Purview. I can see the lakehouse but no details of the delta tables or associated folder/schema structure in the Related tab. In case you have encountered this issue before, I will appreciate your guidance on the troubleshooting. Thanks in advance!SolvedmasinghdataarchApr 01, 2025Copper Contributor530Views2likes4CommentsUnexpected behavior creating Data Product from Fabric assets
We tried creating a data product from PBI assets in Fabric. This resulted in unexpected behavior. Case: We want to create a data product containing: a PBI report, PBI dataset and a PBI dataflow. They show as such in data product search. We create a data product, so we select the one PBI report one PBI dataset and one PBI dataflow to be added the data product. So as a user: we select 3 assets in the menu Purview determines that every table in the PBI dataset is also an asset (onelake delta table). A dataproduct is created containing 35 assets. According to support this is expected behavior. However, from the perspective of a user, selecting 3 assets resulting in 35 assets being added to a data product feels like a bug. From a logical perspective, the outcome is inconsistent with the input. From the perspective of the new pricing model where a customer has to pay for every 'curated asset', this behavior doesn't really land well. We would much rather like to see that data assets are somehow aggregated at a higher level within in the data product view (e.g. in a hierarchy). We have data products containing hundreds of tables. This would make maintaining data products a lot easier, and the overview way more user friendly compared to this 'flat' view of assets.SolvedRikMar 27, 2025Brass Contributor137Views0likes1CommentMoving Data Products Between Governance Domains
I have a number of data products whose location in the governance domain hierarchy is no longer a good fit. I'm struggling to find a route to move them, unpublishing and select edit gets me to the same options as during creation but the governance domain can't be selected and change. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/purview/how-to-create-manage-data-products#edit-data-product is ambiguous on what can be edited but there's no exclusions given. Copilot makes a number of suggestions (dragging and dropping and using the "move" option from the list of data products), unfortunately none of of these appear to be based in reality. Is there a route to make a move? Am I missing permissions? Or is the expectation that I delete and re-create data products any time they need to move.SolvedBarneyLMar 26, 2025Brass Contributor349Views8likes3CommentsData Product Monetization
