Storage Migration Service - Data Transfer Exceptions

Copper Contributor

Hi

We are in the process of migrating data from Windows Server 2012 R2 to Windows Server 2019 (OS Build 17763.864) using the Storage Migration Service. All seems to be going well and we're able to do an initial copy of shares to the destination server.

We have some transfer exceptions which are related to GPO redirected folders where users were granted exclusive access to their redirected folders. It seems like the SMS is not able copy data from these folders. Is SMS able to use the same access levels as a backup service to access files for transfer?

With reference to the "Known Issues" article, under the heading "Certain files do not inventory or transfer, error 5 "Access is denied" leads me to believe that it does use backup privileges. Since we're running Windows Server 2019 Build 17763.864, as the orchestrator and destination for files, the issue listed in the article should be fixed.

We have checked and made sure the account being used for the migration is a local administrator in both the source and the destination.

Any other ideas? We would preferably not want to have to go through the process of adjusting permissions on the redirected folders to give our account access to those folders.

Hope you can assist

Thanks very much!
