Where are the deleted emails for group emails going, from my understanding is that they were going to personal owner email "deleted items" folder but that is not the case.
I tried to find it using Ediscovery and couldn't find anything.

I thought they were permanently deleted- when I delete an email it comes up saying that it will be deleted and not recovered

EDIT - Just tried the below but I couldn't see an email I had just deleted, so YMMV
In short:
1. Open OWA
2. On the folders Node, right click and select 'Open Shared Folder'
3. type in the name of the Office365 group
The folder structure of the Office365 mailbox will now be exposed - the email should be in the deleted items folder - drag it out to the inbox.
