Questions on enabling UM on a remote mailbox object in AD

Brass Contributor

Hi Experts,

One of our customer raised the below query:

How to you enable UM on a remote mailbox object in AD?

Customer is looking for a way to add the relevant attributes for the cloud UM policy to the AD object and have AD Connect sync that to the cloud. There is a massive disconnect between New-Mailbox (and setting a UM policy on it) and then moving it to the cloud, compared to New-RemoteMailbox and provisioning the mailbox in the cloud based on AD attributes on premises. Customer added that they can do that for a lot of the mailbox, they just cannot do it for UM.

Any pointers would be of great help.

Many thanks!!

Hi mate,

Microsoft state that:

The policies that you apply to recipients in the on-premises Exchange organization, such as Unified Messaging or compliance policies, aren't applied to mailboxes in the service. You must configure policies in the service if you want policies to be applied to recipients in the service.

when creating a new remote mailbox you will need to use enable-ummailbox cmdlet to enable this for UM
