Technology Education and Literacy in Schools (TEALS) is a Microsoft Philanthropies program that connects classroom teachers with tech-industry volunteers to create sustainable computer science programs. TEALS is powered by over 1,800 tech volunteers from 750 companies – and YOU could be one. Whether or not you program for you day job. Come listen to Kenney Chan and Grace Waylen talk about the lasting impact you can make. Come be an example of diversity in the tech world!
Our meetings are open to anyone of all gender identities who wants to support women in the ITPro field. Please share this with anyone you think might be interested!
Kenney Chan has a BS in Computer Science from Cornell University and worked as a software engineer. Kenney left the industry to pursue a M.Ed. from Harvard. After graduation, he taught Computer Science and was the academic scheduler at Phillips Exeter Academy. Kenney has been with TEALS since 2016.
Grace Waylen received her MS in Education from Florida State University. She started her career working with English language learners while getting her special education endorsement from the University of Washington. Here's some Q&A and resources we talked about in the call
Is TEALs US based only?
A: TEALS partners with schools in the US and BC, Canada at this time.
Do you teach or provide learning materials to learn Python to a coder who hasn't touched it yet?
We don't explicitly teach the coding piece, but we do ask our volunteers to go through the curriculum over the summer and provide support (online forum, TEALS contact, etc.)
How do you get started with schools on TEALS?
We typically connect with schools from previous contacts/partners, but are open to any high school that is interested in building their program with TEALS. We have unfortunately closed our school application for the 2020-21 school year at this time though.
how many hours per week of commitment?'
typically volunteers will spend a few hours (2-3) in class and some time outside of class
Age of children for these course?
Currently we are supporting only high school courses - our curriculum and training is geared towards that level. We do understand elementary and middle school are important points as well.
TEALS currently recommends going to the Skills for Employability website - https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/corporate-responsibility/skills-employability/computer-science for some elementary and middle school resources and partners!
how does this work now with the COVID-19 ?
In terms of COVID-19, we are deferring to our schools for this year. Some for this current year are moving to distance learning and some are staying closed and we are asking our schools to keep our volunteers in the loop. We are currently planning for next year with the expectation of schools will start as usual in the fall.
