Teams missing GIF option in messaging
This morning we noticed the GIF option in Teams messaging is missing org wide.
Desktop and Web client.
Old messages that were sent with a GIF display as a link now instead of the image
Our global org policy in the Admin porta is set to On
Anyone else seeing this?
Looks like Microsoft is working on fixing it.

interesting, MC1094117 finally showed up in our tenant to tell us that a change was made on June 12.
would have been nice for Microsoft to give advance warning

microsoft support phone call said there is a GCC outage on microsoft 365 privacy settings.
this supposedly affected the optional connected experiences.
they pointed to MC1094117, and also the attempted implementation of MC1022526.
taking it with a grain of salt

My organization is also impacted. Any updates on a fix?

They changed where this is controlled. It is no longer good enough to enable it in Teams. You must enable it in Cloud Policy as well.
Use Cloud Policy service to configure the OCE policy across your organization. As the preferred and primary method for managing access to OCE features, Cloud Policy ensures your configurations are consistently applied. Since it takes precedence over legacy OCE administrator controls, prioritizing Cloud Policy helps guarantee that your intended settings are enforced to meet organizational requirements. Below are the basic steps for creating a policy configuration.
- Sign in to the https://config.office.com/. If you're using the admin center for the first time, review the terms. Then, select Accept.
- Under Customization, select Policy Management.
- On the Policy configurations page, select Create.
- On the Start with the basics page, enter a name (required) and a description (optional), then select Next.
- On the Choose the scope page, determine whether the policy configuration applies to all users, specific groups, or to users who anonymously access documents using Office for the web.
- If the policy configuration applies to specific groups, you can now add multiple groups to a single policy configuration for more flexible targeting. To add groups, select Add Groups and choose the relevant groups. Adding multiple groups to a single policy configuration allows for the same group to be included in multiple policy configurations, facilitating a more streamlined and efficient policy management process.
- After making your selection, choose Next.
- On the Configure Settings page, select the “Allow the use of additional optional connected experiences in Office” policy. In the Configuration Setting dropdown, select either enabled or disabled.
- After making your selections, select Next to review your selections. Then select Create to create the policy configuration.

It seems to be working. I chose the wrong policy. I set the “Allow the use of additional optional connected experiences in Office” instead of the “Allow the use of connected experiences in Office”

Quick update, Looks like MS made some changes that they didn't realize would disable GIPHY.
Microsoft’s June 2025 service update flipped the tenant-wide policy called “Allow the use of additional optional connected experiences in Office” to Disabled. That single switch powers every “cloud-backed” add-on inside Teams, and GIPHY is one of them. When the switch goes off → the GIF button disappears, even if your Teams messaging policies still say “Use Giphy = On.”Step-by-step (cloud policy portal – quickest)
- Browse to https://config.office.com (Global/Intune/Teams admin credentials).
- Customisation → Policy Management → Create (or edit existing).
- On the search bar type optional connected.
- Set “Allow the use of additional optional connected experiences in Office” → Enabled. • Scope the policy to All Users or a security group that needs GIFs.
- Finish and Publish. Policies take ~15–30 min to reach Teams; ask users to sign out/in or restart the client.

Funny how this is marked as solved, we are still experiencing the same issue.
However, there is a workaround. Apparently, if you hit the Windows key and period (.), you get the hidden gif menu.- VCDolphinCopper Contributor
Except that when you do that and click on GIF tab it says "GIF service is not available" So close though. I am keeping this trick in my back poscket though for when/if they fix it. Thanks
