Discussion - Updating our interface with Fluent touches
Hi Insiders. We have received a whole lot of feedback on the overall design of the next version of Microsoft Edge. First off, we would like to thank you all for the feedback that you have submitted. We also want you to know that we are continuing to evolve the look and feel of the new Microsoft Edge. You can see our progress in our new icon, in the changes to dark theme, on the layout of the settings pages and in the style of the controls that we have added so far. Our goal has been to modernize the next version of Microsoft Edge while keeping the feel of the original. In the five years since we released the first Microsoft Edge browser with Windows 10, the Microsoft Design Language has and will continue to change and adapt. We have been evolving our user interface with this in mind and may be the first place you see some of these changes. We are planning on continuing to apply elements of the Microsoft Design Language to align with other Microsoft products. We are thrilled with how much you think about the look and feel of the new Microsoft Edge browser. As we dug into the feedback, we found different ideas lumped together into very broad buckets and felt like we needed to re-sort the issues into new categories that are more specific to the actual issues that were being discussed. The previous categories that we have been reporting on are: Update the user interface with the Fluent Design System Make tabs more square and less rounded, like the current version of Microsoft Edge Provide a transparent theme for the browser frame The address bar and text are too large The first step of this journey was to dig into each of the feedback items individually and understand what your ask was, and if there was a reason listed for the feedback. This helped us better understand why you are asking for these changes. The next step we took was to recombine the feedback and sort it into more specific buckets. We understand change is challenging, and we are not changing our interface just to be different. We have been working closely with our designers to get a look and feel that aligns with our Fluent Design language and meets our standards for usability and accessibility. It is our goal for our design to be easier to use on a daily basis. When you provide feedback, it helps us to challenge our assumptions and makes us reanalyze our conclusions. Based on this analysis, we are seeing the following themes emerge from your comments: we will be tracking and following feedback in these categories going forward: Ability to add distinct color or color themes to the main browser interface. Add transparency or other material effect to the main browser interface. The corners of the tabs and browser buttons have been rounded too much. Make the tab band and address bar / toolbar smaller if device doesn’t support touch capability. Update or add animations to user interface. Add a reveal effect to highlight on mouse hover. We would love to start talking about these items now. Please let us know if you think that we are on the right track with the changes we have made so far. The most impactful feedback is that which lists the task that you are trying to accomplish, the challenges that you face while accomplishing it, and your ideas on how it could be made easier. Hi Insiders, we have received a lot of feedback about how you would like to close your tabs with the option of easily finding and reopening them later as you move between different workflows. Specifically, many of you are asking for the Tab Set Aside feature from the previous version of Microsoft Edge to be brought back. Some of you are also asking for a prompt to help avoid losing all your tabs such that you can’t find them again if you accidentally close the browser. • Ask users if they want to close all tabs when they close a browser window • Bring the tab set aside feature from the current version of Microsoft Edge Each of these requests seem related to the fact that many of you have a lot of tabs open at once across many tasks and workflows. This leads to a situation where it can often be difficult to manage all of your tabs at the same time, and each additional tab makes it difficult to deal with all of the rest (e.g. tabs get smaller, harder to read each titles, many similar tab icons begin to blur together, etc.). But it can also be scary to close tabs and declutter your workspace, for fear of not being able to find things again later if you need to. We have definitely experienced this problem ourselves, observed it in our research and conversations with users, and agree it is an area where we want to invest in tools to help you be more productive across various tasks. We are actively investigating the best way to address this problem and would love your help and input as we proceed to make sure we get the experience just right. We have looked through your feedback, and there are definitely some very valid reasons for why there was value in the Set Aside feature such as: Helping you pick up on a task later without leaving the tabs open when you aren’t using them, organizing your tabs into groups related to a similar task, and a short term home for more transient tasks that didn’t warrant saving in a permanent location such as Favorites. We also reviewed feedback on the Set Aside feature itself from people actually using it in the previous version of Microsoft Edge, and there were some very valid critiques on how it worked and how it could be improved. For example, the Set Aside buttons being in a location where they were often accidentally clicked causing some to think their tabs had disappeared, requests to be able to set aside a subset of the currently open tabs rather than “all or nothing”, or requests to rename and personalize tab groups further to more easily find them again later. The request for a prompt before closing the browser also feels related, because if people could always confidently find and reopen any of their previous tabs, then there would be less fear or concern about losing tabs if they are accidently closed. This would allow people to feel free to declutter and reduce the number of open tabs with no fear about finding them later if needed, and more easily focus on the subset of tabs they are working on now. As we begin this journey of investigating how best to address these requests, we are asking for your help. Please continue to tell us more about your experience with Set Aside and closing tabs in Microsoft Edge, why these features are important to you in which types of tasks, what did and didn’t work for you about previous implementations, and how you would improve on these scenarios going forward.Dev channel update to 80.0.320.3 is live
UPDATE 3: 320.5 has been released with the fix for Netflix not working. UPDATE 2: 320.4 has been released with the fix for the Task Bar icons issue. The Netflix issue is expected to be fixed in another update tomorrow. UPDATE: We're expecting to release a small update in the next day or two to fix an issue where users with multiple browser profiles still see the old Edge icon on the Task Bar, and an issue where Netflix doesn't work. Hello insiders, we’ve got some big news today! With today’s Dev Channel update to 80.0.320.3, we’re officially releasing a new icon for all Microsoft Edge channels. You can read more about it here: https://blogs.windows.com/msedgedev/2019/11/04/edge-chromium-release-candidate-get-ready. That page also contains a date, January 15 th , which is when we expect to release our first Stable Channel build, at which point Edge will be generally available to download on Windows and Mac. Some of you may have noticed a cryptic update last week. That was part of a series of puzzles that hundreds of insiders participated in over the past weekend. The puzzles culminated in a surfing game hidden inside Edge, and the reward for beating it was the chance to see the new icon before anybody else. With all of these exciting announcements, we do have a few known issues that are still in this week’s build: Extensions that are installed from the Chrome Web Store aren’t getting automatically updated. We expect the fix for this issue to be in today’s Canary and next week’s Dev. The fix for the issue where Edge’s first launch leads to a blank white window didn’t make it into this week’s build. We now expect it next week. There are some issues where users with multiple audio output devices sometimes don’t get any sound from Edge. In one case, Edge becomes muted in the Windows Volume Mixer and unmuting it fixes it. In another, restarting the browser fixes it. At certain zoom levels, there is a noticeable line between the browser UI and the web contents. Some users were still seeing screenshots that are automatically taken by the feedback tool turn out garbled or all black. Another potential fix for this is expected next week. Jumplist entries are not consistent between the Start Menu and the Task Bar for some users. We believe this is due to the shortcut on the Start Menu not getting migrated properly after an Edge update and are working on a fix. Sometimes the browser will appear to not respond to any user input (clicking or scrolling in webpages doesn’t do anything, hovering over UI doesn’t make it change), but clicking on certain buttons still works (like the … menu). The cause of this is due to an error in the GPU process, and opening the browser task manager (right-click near the window minimize/maximize/close buttons or hit shift+esc on the keyboard) will open a window that will allow you to end the GPU process, which will fix the issue. And now, for all of the new things that are worth noting: Added features: Added the ability for websites installed as apps to be restored when a browser session is restored after update, crash, etc. Added support for an upstream Chromium policy that allows a user to remember a decision to open a link using another application (for example, to join a meeting in Microsoft Teams). Added support for periods in single-word intranet URLs. Added the ability to delete Collections items using the Delete keyboard key. Added a dialog for when browser sign-in is disabled by policy. Improved reliability: Fixed an issue where Edge crashes shortly after launch for some users if sync is enabled. Fixed an issue where right-clicking the back button crashes the browser. Fixed an issue where editing text in the address bar sometimes causes a browser crash. Fixed a browser crash when updating extensions. Fixed an issue where using the built-in abusive ad blocker sometimes causes the browser to crash upon launch. Fixed an issue where certain websites like YouTube rendered huge, making them unusable. Fixed an issue where print preview does not load. Fixed an issue where PDFs sometimes don’t load properly. Fixed an issue where right-clicking on a PDF sometimes causes the tab to crash. Fixed an issue where navigating to certain webpages with videos causes the tab to crash. Fixed an issue where Application Guard windows hang upon startup. Fixed an issue where all Edge windows open completely white with no UI, but disabling Application Guard mitigates the issue. Fixed an issue where certain DRM-protected videos don’t play. Fixed an issue where certain protected videos like from Netflix don’t work. Fixed an issue where tooltips don’t appear. Improved the reliability of history and favorites items appearing in the address bar suggestions dropdown. Improved the reliability of installation. Changed behavior: Fixed an issue where Single Sign-On stops working and users unexpectedly see a username/password prompt to log into websites. Fixed an issue where two Edge shortcuts are sometimes on the Taskbar after an update. Fixed an issue where Work profiles that were erroneously added to the browser were unremovable. Fixed an issue where Application Guard windows open when the browser is launched even though they shouldn’t. Fixed an issue where enabling Application Guard sometimes causes downloads to be blocked in non-Application Guard windows. Fixed an issue where the first run experience sometimes runs every time the browser is opened. Fixed an issue where the profile Settings page has no way for the user to fix an issue with their browser sign-in when one is needed. Fixed an issue where sync can’t be turned off while it’s in the “setting up” state. Fixed an issue where certain UI buttons show $1 instead of their keyboard shortcut in their tooltip. Fixed an issue where the favorites bar is shown when in full screen mode. Fixed an issue where Collections content sometimes gets truncated. Fixed an issue where Spellcheck squigglies appear in Collections items even though they aren’t actionable. Fixed an issue where an incorrect image is used when adding certain webpages to a Collection. Fixed an issue where clicking the button to open the text styles flyout in a Collection sometimes doesn’t work. Fixed an issue where text styling in a Collection isn’t applied properly when using the keyboard to do the selection. Fixed the text style dropdown when editing text in a Collection. Fixed an issue where Collections contents sometimes can’t be deleted. Fixed an issue where the cancel button isn’t functional in certain Collections dialogs. Fixed some issues with the Mac Touch Bar when working with multiple tabs at the same time. Fixed an issue where open tabs sometimes aren’t properly imported from Chrome. Fixed an issue where extensions aren’t sorted by name on the Extensions management page. Improved compatibility of certain websites with Tracking Prevention. We have received a lot of feedback about supporting inking annotations for web pages like what we have in the current version of Microsoft Edge. Many users have told us that they use this functionality as a daily driver and would like to see it in the new version of Microsoft Edge as well. We would like to understand the scenarios in which you would use this functionality. Details about what you use it for, what are the expectations about availability of different tools, saving and sharing options etc. would be extremely useful in making sure we provide the best user experience to you. Welcome to the new year! Today we’re releasing build 81.0.381.0 to the Dev Channel, which as you can see is the first new build from major version 81. We haven’t been completely asleep during the holidays though; we’ve been slowing turning favorites sync back on for most Canary and Dev users, with the last of them coming back online a couple of days ago. As sync is re-enabled, some machines may experience duplication-like behavior as the machines get back into a clean state, but that behavior shouldn’t persist, and any changes you make to your favorites should now sync properly (but please let us know if that’s not the case!) We also have a couple of informational updates. First, we’ve proposed our security baseline configuration for when organizations install the Stable channel of Edge: https://blogs.windows.com/msedgedev/2019/12/18/security-baseline-draft-edge-79/. There’s an accompanying discussion over on the Security Baselines forum. Second, we started a discussion around the value proposition of Reading List and how users would like to see us evolve it moving forward: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/discussions/reading-list-discussion/m-p/1070553. As for the most noteworthy product changes: Added features: Added a feature to suggest URLs to visit that are similar to typed URLs that result in a failed navigation due to the fact that no webpage at the typed URL exists. Added a keyboard shortcut for starting Read Aloud (ctrl + shift + U). Added the ability to paste multiple items into a Collection at the same time. Added a dialog to tell users when a new data type is available to sync. Added support for Guided Switch to suggest going back to a personal profile when visiting links to certain non-work or school resources in a work or school profile. Added support for the Chromium management policy to disable web payment APIs in webpages. Added a management policy for disabling Microsoft Search for Business. Improved reliability: Fixed a crash when syncing favorites. Fixed an issue where favorites that are synced between multiple machines sometimes get deleted from one machine when they’re edited on another. Fixed a crash when syncing Collections. Fixed a crash when sync is enabled. Fixed a crash when syncing with Edge mobile. Fixed a crash when clearing browsing data. Fixed an issue where Collections don’t sync properly. Fixed a crash when importing certain data from other browsers. Fixed an issue where Edge fails to install due to a crash in the installer. Fixed an issue where uninstalling Edge and re-installing the same channel with a lower version number causes Edge to no longer launch. Fixed an issue where enabling Tracking Prevention prevents some pages from ever loading, regardless of the level Tracking Prevention is set at. Fixed an issue where certain videos don’t load when Tracking Prevention is enabled. Fixed an issue where Tracking Prevention prevented users from logging into certain websites. Fixed an issue where navigation in new tabs sometimes fails, either showing an error that the connection is closed or crashing the tab, but subsequent navigations are sometimes okay. Fixed a crash for users who have certain anti-virus programs installed. Fixed an issue where Amazon Music fails to play. Fixed an issue where sharing a local file (for example, a PDF that’s been downloaded onto the machine) fails. Fixed a crash during shutdown. Fixed an issue where the policy to enable/disable printing headers and footers doesn’t work. Improved the reliability of installation. Changed behavior: Fixed an issue where downloading files in IE mode tabs sometimes prevents the browser from being closed even after the downloads are completed. Fixed an issue where the user can’t remove pages from the list of pages to open when the browser first starts. Fixed an issue where removing a search provider in Settings sometimes results in the inability to add that same search provider again. Fixed an issue where the second page of the print preview dialog doesn’t render properly. Fixed an issue where unselecting categories to be synced during the First Run Experience sometimes results in those data types still being synced. Fixed an issue where the Office New Tab Page is broken. Fixed an issue where creating a new Collection sometimes fails. Fixed an issue where some images can’t be dragged and dropped into a Collection. Fixed an issue where using Collections sometimes causes error reporting dialogs to appear. Fixed an issue where certain suggested sites in the Pinning Wizard don’t get pinned to the taskbar. Fixed an issue where the toggle to sync open tabs isn’t functional. Fixed an issue where login details appear as autocomplete candidates for text fields that aren’t used for logging in. Fixed an issue where signing into the browser sometimes fails to properly set the profile picture. Fixed an issue on Mac where websites installed as apps don’t open and instead show an error if Edge isn’t already running. Fixed an issue on Mac where the update page spins forever or eventually shows an error after a successful update. Improved how much content is blocked by SmartScreen’s dangerous content blocker. Fixed an issue where highlighting text in the address bar then clicking on webpages sometimes causes black-on-dark text when the browser is in Dark Theme. Fixed some graphical flickering when switching between IE mode tabs and non-IE mode tabs. Fixed a white flash when entering Reading View. Improved the PDF reader’s background area color in Dark Theme. Fixed an issue where Application Guard windows sometimes don’t use the proper theme. Improved performance when opening Application Guard windows for the first time. Changed the name of the window that appears when you hover over a running instance of Edge on the Task Bar to only be the name of the active tab in that window instead of also containing the name of the profile and browser. Changed the behavior of “deprecated” management policies to still apply properly, which differs from Chrome’s definition of “not supported” policies. Both “not supported” in Chrome and “obsolete” in Edge are policies which are no longer supported and just show an error instead of being applied. Known issues: After an initial fix for it recently, some users are still experiencing Edge windows becoming all black. UI popups like menus are not affected and opening the Browser Task Manager (keyboard shortcut is shift + esc) and killing the GPU process fixes it. Some users are still not seeing Collections being enabled by default on Canary and Dev. For users who want to try Collections, enabling the flag at edge://flags/#edge-collections should still work to turn on the feature. Over these past months we have been busy reading all the great feedback you've been sending us through the "Send feedback" smiley, here on the insider forum, and to our @MSEdgeDev Twitter handle. As we go through the feedback, common themes, popular suggestions, and bugs with broad impact emerge. We've been highlighting this "top feedback" within the team, and we'd like to share it with you as well. Starting with this post, we will regularly summarize the most significant feedback we are hearing from you and give you an update on the status of each item. We'll also highlight some of the changes we've made that were inspired or prioritized because of your feedback. Check out the list below, and of course use this forum thread to share your thoughts and discuss. Your feedback has directly led to many improvements. Here are just some of the most notable, now available in the Canary channel: Dark theme is here! The most common request over the last several months is to add a dark theme to Edge – check it out in Settings under Appearance today! Need help translating? Bing Translate is now built into Microsoft Edge – look for the prompt offering a translation the next time you encounter a page that isn't in your language Do you want more control over the data your browser keeps? Check out the privacy controls in Settings under Privacy and services, including the option to Choose what to clear every time you close the browser. Don’t want to see the favorites bar all the time? There is now an option in Settings under Appearance that allows you to show it only when you open a new tab. Are you annoyed by all the ads competing for your attention while you're trying to focus? Try Reading View for a distraction-free reading experience – look for the book icon in your address bar. Want to sign-in and sync to AAD accounts just like your Microsoft account? Sign-in and sync of AAD accounts is now available. Here are some top feedback topics we plan to address in the coming months. (Of course, plans can change. We'll make sure to let you know if timing or direction shift on any of these.) Planned to be addressed in the Canary channel in September 2019: An option to prevent auto-play of video and audio when you open a website A round of improvements to scrolling experience, with more (including performance) to come down the line The addition of a favorites button to the toolbar, to provide quicker access to favorites Planned to be addressed in the Canary channel in October 2019: Inking on PDFs When you sign-in to the browser, your sign-in profile picture will accurately be kept up to date. When you have more than one profile, better handling for opening links and attachments in the appropriate profile. An option to set your own photos as the background image on the New Tab Page Enable search in the extensions store A bug fix for users who receive an “Administrator Mode Detected” notification (advising them to close and relaunch the browser in non-administrator mode) each time they launch Edge ClickOnce deployment of Windows applications from web pages The team is reviewing the following feature requests and we'll be sure to let you know if they're getting ready to show up in one of our channels: Feature requests for the New Tab Page, including the capability to turn off the news feed, to hide the Bing search bar, to change the search provider, to rename tiles, and to support Dark Theme Bring back features from the current version of Microsoft Edge such as tab set aside, tab preview, "Ask Cortana", and the reading list Make it easier to share web content with other users and apps Provide an option to set a custom home page Update the user interface with the Fluent Design System, including less rounded tabs Support themes from the Chrome Web Store Allow sign-in to the browser with a Google account Provide different options for sorting favorites Provide run / open / save / save as options when downloading files Finally, there are a few areas where you've told us our quality needs to improve. We are investigating these areas and will fix specific bugs when they are identified: Edge should use less memory and CPU than it does Scrolling should feel smoother, both for web pages and PDFs Update does not always work reliably Drop-down menus in some web pages are not working You can help in these areas by keeping the bug reports coming. Dev channel update to 80.0.361.5 is live
Hello insiders, today we’re releasing build 80.0.361.5 to the Dev channel! This is the final build for major version 80, which means it’s also our next Beta channel candidate. This is also the final Dev channel update for the year; we don’t expect to publish anything more until January. However, we couldn’t leave you without some holiday treats, so here are all of the feature rollouts that have been recently completed for the Canary and Dev channels. First, we’ve officially opened up the new Edge Extension Store for submissions! You can read more about the process for submitting to the store in this blog post: https://blogs.windows.com/msedgedev/2019/12/16/get-started-extensions-addons-microsoft-edge-chromium. Next, for the web developers, we’ve published an example application on our GitHub page that serves as a comprehensive API demonstration of our new WebView2 control. You can read more about how to use it in this blog post: https://blogs.windows.com/msedgedev/2019/12/11/webview2-interactive-api-sample. For our ARM enthusiasts, we’re bringing our native ARM64 builds to the Dev channel today! These builds have been in Canary for the last few weeks, and we’ve ironed out most of the major issues during that time. There’s still one known issue though: certain DRM video on some websites doesn’t play properly. If you didn’t see it last week, we made a short post here about some of our work on the Mac touch bar: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Articles/Try-the-revamped-Touch-Bar-experience-on-Microsoft-Edge-on-Mac/m-p/1061372. Finally, we’ve got three features to look for in upcoming builds. One of them is what we’re calling the “pinning wizard”. It will occasionally pop up from your Task Bar and suggest top websites from your history to pin directly to the Task Bar as installed websites. It can also be used at any time from … > More tools. For users of high contrast themes in Windows, Edge now supports high contrast themes as well! It will follow the theme you’ve chosen in the OS Settings and brings us back to parity with the support offered in Edge Legacy. And for users of Immersive Reader (formerly known as Reading View), we’ve greatly expanded the number of color themes you can choose from. Many of these are specially designed to reduce eye strain and increase reading comprehension. Before we get on with the rest of the features and additions that are worth mentioning this week, you should know that favorites sync is still disabled for the majority of users. This includes brand new machines you install Edge on, so if you’re setting up Edge for the first time and want access to your favorites, you’ll need to manually export your favorites to a file on a different machine and import them on the new one. We’re also working on a deduplication mechanism once favorites sync is re-enabled, which should prevent new duplicates from coming in as well as remove duplicates for users who have already had their favorites duplicated. Added features: Added support for Dolby Vision playback. Enabled users of Windows Mixed Reality to view 360° videos on VR headsets. Improved reliability: Fixed a crash when opening certain PDFs. Fixed an issue where clicking on the Feedback button crashes the browser. Fixed a browser crash for users of Collections. Fixed a crash when closing the browser. Fixed an issue where typing passwords into password fields sometimes causes a tab crash. Fixed a crash when playing the Surf game. Fixed an issue where certain websites don’t load properly. Fixed an issue where Netflix playback fails for certain videos with error D7381. Changed behavior: By request, favorites folders are now yellow. Updated Adobe Flash to version 32.0.0.303. Fixed an issue where PDFs that fail to save for some reason end up failing silently instead of showing an error to the user. Fixed an issue where the font dropdown in Settings doesn’t work. Fixed an issue where the search engine can’t be edited because the Save button doesn’t work. Fixed an issue where the current display language can be removed from Edge even though it shouldn’t be. Fixed an issue where Edge installations on Azure Active Directory domain-joined machines get signed into the wrong account on first run. Fixed an issue where some webpages aren’t able to be translated, and instead show an error saying that the source language and target language are the same. Fixed an issue where Learn More links clicked during the First Run Experience open in tabs hidden behind the FRE instead of in a dialog above it. Fixed an issue where navigation to certain websites in IE mode sometimes fails. Fixed an issue where adding an item to a Collection sometimes doesn’t load the image properly and instead shows the loading spinner forever. Fixed an issue where pasting items from one Collection into another doesn’t paste them in the correct order. Fixed an issue where dragging and dropping an image into a Collection sometimes results in the wrong link being saved. Fixed an issue where feedback screenshots sometimes don’t work properly on Mac. Fixed an issue where the keyboard shortcut for saving a PDF doesn’t work on Mac. Fixed an issue where desktop notifications are broken on Windows Insider builds. Fixed an issue where Edge sometimes fails to automatically update on Windows Insider builds. Fixed an issue where uninstalling and reinstalling Edge sometimes results in it no longer being able to launch on Windows Insider builds. Known issues: Navigation in new tabs sometimes fails, either showing an error that the connection is closed, or crashing the tab. In some cases, subsequent navigations in the tab are okay. After an initial fix for it recently, some users are still experiencing Edge windows becoming all black. UI popups like menus are not affected, and opening the Browser Task Manager (keyboard shortcut is shift+esc) and killing the GPU process fixes it. Highlighting text in the address bar then clicking on webpages sometimes causes black-on-dark text when the browser is in Dark Theme. The Settings page appears too big/zoomed in on certain machines. Some users are still not seeing Collections being enabled by default on Canary and Dev. For users who want to try Collections, enabling the flag at edge://flags/#edge-collections should still work to turn on the feature. There are some issues where users with multiple audio output devices sometimes don’t get any sound from Edge. In one case, Edge becomes muted in the Windows Volume Mixer and unmuting it fixes it. In another, restarting the browser fixes it. At certain zoom levels, there is a noticeable line between the browser UI and the web contents. Jumplist entries are not consistent between the Start Menu and the Task Bar for some users. We believe this is due to the shortcut on the Start Menu not getting migrated properly after an Edge update and are working on a fix. Additionally, after getting the update for the new icon, there are still places on the Start Menu, for example when searching, that still show the old icon. Other places like the Task Bar may be able to be fixed by un-pinning and then re-pinning any Edge shortcuts that already exist there.
