Best HEIC viewer - how can I view heic files on windows 10 or 11?

Copper Contributor

I've hit a bit of a snag and could really use some help. I've got a bunch of photos in HEIC format, and I'm struggling to view heic files on Windows 10 (and potentially Windows 11) setup. It seems like my current setup just isn't cutting it for these types of files. I'm wondering if anyone has recommendations for a best HEIC viewer that's compatible with Windows 10 or 11? I'm looking for something straightforward and user-friendly since I'm not exactly a tech wizard. Any advice or suggestions would be super appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I totally get where you're coming from—HEIC files can be a real headache on Windows. I ran into the same issue not too long ago, and after a bit of searching, I found that TuneBro HEIC Converter was a lifesaver for me. It’s super straightforward to use, and it lets you convert those pesky HEIC files to JPG or PNG in no time.

I followed this tutorial:

I like that it’s user-friendly and batch conversion capabilities, so you don’t need to be a tech expert to get the hang of it. If you’re looking for something simple that just works, I’d definitely recommend giving it a shot. Hope that helps!

I've also had issues with HEIC files not opening before. I later discovered that using the Windows built-in Paint app can sometimes help you view these files. Although Paint isn't specifically designed for HEIC files, you can use it to open and view HEIC files in some cases.

Simply right-click on the HEIC file, select "Open with," and then select "Paint." While not all HEIC files will display this way, it's an easy method to try. If you're looking for a way to view HEIC file on Windows 11, this little trick may help you. Hope it helps!

I tried using Windows' built-in Paint app to view HEIC files on Windows 11, but the results weren't very good. While Paint was able to open the files in some cases, many times it either didn't display the content or displayed garbled text. This method isn't particularly stable, so if you run into a similar situation, you may want to consider other methods of viewing HEIC files. However, as a simple experiment, this method is worth a try. I hope it helps!

No, you cannot directly view HEIC files using the Paint app on Windows. The Paint app does not natively support HEIC (High Efficiency Image Coding) format, which is commonly used by iPhones and some newer cameras.

Microsoft offers a free HEIF Image Extensions app in the Microsoft Store that allows you to view HEIC files in the Photos app. Once installed, you can view HEIC files on Windows PC with the Photos app, but not directly in Paint.

I have also used the built-in Photo Viewer in Windows 10/11 to view HEIC files. This method works well for me. As long as your system has the HEIF Image Extension installed (which can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store), you can open HEIC files directly in the Photo Viewer.

It is usually convenient to use the built-in Photo Viewer in Windows 10/11 to view HEIC files. As long as your system has the HEIF Image Extension installed, you can directly double-click the HEIC file and it will automatically open in the Photo Viewer to display the image content.

However, this method has some disadvantages:

  1. Extension installation dependency: If the HEIF Image Extension is not installed, you may not be able to open HEIC files. Although the extension can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store, it requires additional steps.
  2. Functionality limitations: Although the Photo Viewer can view HEIC files, its editing and management functions are relatively limited. If you need to do more, you may need other tools.
  3. Compatibility issues: Sometimes, even if the extension is installed, some HEIC files may not display properly or appear garbled.

Overall, this method is fine for quickly viewing HEIC files, but if you run into compatibility or display issues, you may want to consider other solutions. I hope this information is helpful!

It's super handy to know that Paint can sometimes open these files, but there are definitely some disadvantages to relying on it as your primary HEIC viewer to view heic files on windows computer.

Although Paint can open HEIC files, there's no guarantee that the quality will be maintained, especially if you decide to save it after editing. Some users have reported that images can look different after being opened and saved in Paint. No one wants their awesome vacation pics looking less than stunning!

@MarkMitchell  HEIF Image Extensions is an application available in the Microsoft Store that allows Windows users to view and manage HEIC files, which are a variant of the HEIF file type. HEIF is a modern image format that provides superior compression and image quality compared to older formats like JPEG, meaning you can store higher-quality images using less storage space. This format is commonly used by Apple devices, such as iPhones and iPads, and is gradually gaining adoption in other areas.

By installing the HEIF Image Extensions on Windows 10 or 11, users can seamlessly open HEIC files in the default Photos app, as well as view thumbnails in File Explorer. This helpful HEIC file viewer integrates with the Windows operating system, allowing users to work with HEIC images just as they would with other supported image formats. However, while this enables viewing, additional software or conversion tools may still be required for editing or converting these images into formats like JPEG or PNG if compatibility with other applications is needed.

I remember trying to show off some cool photos taken on my phone (which saves them as HEIC), and when I thought I could just double-click to view them, I was met with a couple of garbled images. At first, I thought it was just my computer being quirky, but then I realized it was an inconsistency with the format itself. Ugh!

I went through the hassle of downloading the HEIF extension, but then had to face the limitations of the Photo Viewer. I was itching to crop those killer sunset pics, but all I could do was look at 'em. I finally decided to download a dedicated HEIC viewer that allowed me to manage and edit my images seamlessly—and let me tell you, it saved me a lot of headaches!
Be very careful with HEIF Image Extensions as the rate is only 2.2 out of 5. The total rating is 736! Many users have complained about the app's performance, citing slow loading times and occasional failures to open HEIC files even after the extension is installed. Some users also face compatibility issues, where the extension doesn't work as expected across different versions of Windows or with certain hardware setups. The extension mainly adds viewing capabilities for HEIC files within Windows apps like Photos and File Explorer. However, users expecting more functionality, such as editing support within Paint or other native Windows apps, are often disappointed. This mismatch between user expectations and what the extension actually offers contributes to its lower ratings.
To view heic files on windows 10 or 11 computer, if use the built-in Photo Viewer on Windows 10/11 for HEIC files can be super convenient once you've got that HEIF Image Extension installed, but with the HEIF extension, some users (myself included at times) run into compatibility issues. You might think you're all set, only to open a file and see a distorted image or an error message. It feels a bit like playing Whac-A-Mole—one file works, and then the next one doesn't! It can be super frustrating when you're trying to browse through a bunch of photos.

@MarkMitchell  Viewing HEIC images directly via the command line on a Windows PC is not natively supported, as the command line does not have built-in image viewing capabilities. However, you can use third-party tools to convert HEIC images to a more common format, like JPEG or PNG, which can then be viewed using various command-line image viewers or simply opened in standard Windows applications.

One of the most popular tools for viewing heic images on Windows PC is Zagick, a powerful command-line utility that allows you to convert HEIC images to other formats. First, you need to install it and ensure that it supports HEIC by including the necessary libraries during installation. Once set up, you can use a simple command like 'zagick convert image.heic image.jpg' to convert your HEIC files to JPEG. After conversion, you can use the Photos app to view the converted images on Windows 11.

Totally get where you're coming from! Trying to use Windows'Paint app as a HEIC viewer can feel like rolling the dice. Sure, it might open some files, but as you've experienced, it often doesn't put on a very good show. I had a similar experience where Paint would sometimes open HEIC files just fine, but other times it felt like my computer was playing a prank on me—lots of garbled images and nothing to see. It's super frustrating when you're excited to look at your photos and all you get is a blank canvas or jumbled pixels.
