Microsoft is introducing Board view in #SharePointOnline / #MicrosoftLists

  • Configure which columns to displayed on card & in what order
  • Release Timeline

Read more at: Board view in SharePoint online / Microsoft Lists

  • Jason1900 You can set the sort order for columns from classic experience list view settings.

    1. Click on settings (gear) icon
    2. Select "List settings"
    3. Go to "Views" section
    4. Select your view by clicking on it
    5. Apply sort order as per your requirements and click "OK"

Two things: (1) it would sure be great to be able to remove or move the "Unassigned items" section. and (2) it would be great to be able to drag and drop cards in a section, to reorder them. Doesn't seem to be a way to reorder.

I second this. The Kanban view is a good start, but feels a little unfinished. Adding ability to remove unsigned items column and reorder cards would be minimal effort and add a lot of value. Long term I'd love to see more more features like relational database tables similar to competitor products.

ganeshsanap do you know, if Microsoft Lists will support document libraries any time in future (or is this already the case as document libraries derive from lists)?
I'm looking for a board view for document sets (with status and datetime columns) within a SharePoint document library.
    • gojo12 Not sure about Microsoft lists supporting document libraries. But, I don't see the board view option for document libraries currently. It's only available in lists.

        Hello ganeshsanap, thank you.
That's what I could figure out as well.
Do you know if there plans for implementing the board view for document libraries in the future? Is there anything on the roadmap?

I've got the same scenario, Gottfried. DId you ever find a solution?

MJSuckling I don't think people columns will be supported in near future. Choice columns are supported for now.

Is there a limit to how many fields can be seen on the card?

I've been having some issues in setting up the card, not all columns appear available for selection on the "Edit card" menu and even if I try to force via the JSON format window, fields I need can't seem to be brought into the card

You need to go to the legacy settings for the list view. One way is to select All Items then select Edit View. There you can find the fields you want in the card, and select them. Then select the board view you created and customize card. You should see the fields you just selected and you can add them to your card. There is a limit to how many can be on the card (can't remember the number).
    • AlmaL21 What is the data/column type of column you want to show on card?

Did you included these particular columns in your board view?

      1. You can do this from List settings. Open your list & go to list settings.
      2. Select your board view under "Views" section
      3. Select checkbox against the column you want to include in view
      4. Click OK

Then try using JSON approach & see if it works for you.

ganeshsanap Can someone help me to sort the items in the board view by newest item first? I have each board separated by department in the board view, but that departments newest item is going to the bottom, and I want the newest at the top of the board.

Can you order the cards so the newest cards are that of the buckets?

    • mleijzer I can see this feature in my targeted release tenant. Microsoft recently started rolling out this feature to targeted release tenants.

Microsoft will soon rollout this to all SharePoint tenants. You can check the "Release timeline" section in above blog post. You can also follow the blog post to see the updated "Release timeline" as I will keep updating it if Microsoft postpones the feature rollout.

I still don't have the option for Board View on Lists here in the UK. When will it be available?

Also, under All Items I don't have the option to "Edit View"
And, under Settings the only option is "Recycle Bin"

How do I get all the settings?

    • snjames What permissions you have on SharePoint site and list?

ganeshsanap I have full permissions on Microsoft 365. I can't see where my permissions setting is on Lists (and I'm not on Sharepoint)

For Tasks List (instead of Items List), the board view does not seems as functionnal as in Items List. It is not possible to select a column (like the state of the task) to transform the Grid view in Board view. Is this possibility a bug or still in work in progress ?
    • dno350 Can you share the screenshot of view where you want to show board view?

Are you classic experience "Tasks" list template? Are you trying to show board in Grid view (quick edit) of list (this is not possible)?

Update on the sorting issue. I'm still having problems with sorting on the board view of a custom JSON list. If I turn on sorting, some of my cards on the board do not show, EVEN though the number of items at the top of each bucket says that they are there. For example, I have a bucket that says there are 12 items in the bucket at the top but it only shows 2. This is for multiple buckets across the board. If I turn off sorting it correctly shows all the items in each bucket. I've had a ticket open with Microsoft support since January of this year and still no resolution. Don't hold your breath if you need sorting on Board Views. I don't think Microsoft is even aware of the problem let alone fix it any time soon.

I’m very surprised that the ability to reorder cards in the column of a Kanban board is still not available even after this view has been available for over a year and a half. This is fundamental functionality for Agile methodology in that you need to remain flexible and reprioritize work accordingly yet Microsoft Lists still does not allow a user to do this. When will this be available?
