One of my customer is running a POC for Teams. They have Skype4B server 2015 onprem, and have "open federation" they can from Teams chat and see presence with external users. But when it comes to Internal users (on S4B) they only see them as Offline.

Hybrid has been installed on the S4B but we have not synced the users up and down regarding to that they have siptrunk and phone enabled users, and this is not something that is delivered i Norway. 

Any good suggestion to fix the presence issue?

Sounds like a fun project to help customers POC Teams. 

 

For a Skype for Business hybrid you need to sync user objects to Azure AD even if you are not enabling them for Skype Online. Both Teams and Skype Online needs this.

 If the user is created by using the online portal for Office 365, the user account will not be synchronized with on-premises Active Directory, and the user will not exist in the on-premises Active Directory. If you have already created users in Skype for Business Online, and want to configure hybrid with an on-premises Skype for Business Server, see Moving users from Skype for Business Online to Skype for Business on-premises in Skype for Business Server 2015.

 

Teams will use Skype Online for communication between Teams and Skype On-Prem users. Set the coexistence mode to SfbOnlye, SfBWithTeamsCollab, SfBWithTeamsCollabAndMeetings, or Islands (SfB modes will be updated soon http://www.lync.se/2019/02/update-for-teams-coexistence-modes/) and then they will be able to use Skype on-prem (with PSTN telephony) together with Teams.

 

Users have to run both Teams client and Skype client at the same time that can be confusing (Islands mode) and call controls on headsets won't work in Teams client.

 

There is no Calling Plans with Norwegian numbers delivered from Microsoft but you can use Direct Routing with a SBC that your customer hosts in their own environment or you can buy a hosted DR from a ITSP (I guess the big ones in Norway can deliver that, if not there is a Swedish ITSP that delivers DR with +47 numbers).

The AD sync to Azure AD is ok. Checked with the customer. They have not been added for license yet i O365. Should not have anything to do with it I think or?

Users who has been moved to Teams and O365 (mail and Office) works fine with presence but they can't see presence for the onprem users. If we add an user who is onprem well we can see the organisation but all users are showed as Offline even we can check it from Skype client Onprem that they are Green and "online"  :)

When it comes to DR, they will have it from my company who has an multi-tennant, multi trunk, telco independent delivered from Azure :) This part we full control on :)

Hybrid is ok. Most of the presence is ok. But there is something strange. People in recent shows status, but new people you try to contact who is on skype onprem (not moved yet) well they are shown as offline. :(

@Kai Stenbergwe are seeing a virtually identical situation to this at my company now except we have Skype for Business 2019 on-prem. Same problem though, move a user to Teams Only mode, searching for any user on-premise shows them as offline. However, if an on-prem user initiates a conversation with the Teams only user then the presence appears correct. We have Hybrid configured and all looks good there.

 

I logged a support ticket with MS and they directed me to this thread saying its a known issue/expected behaviour which doesn't help me in the slightest.

Figured this one out. So we have our org-wide Teams Upgrade status set to "Islands mode". This means that Teams will be looking for the presence of the users Team client. As we are in the early stages of a migration a lot of our users aren't running Skype and Teams side by side on their desktop and still fully using Skype. As they dont have Teams running, this is why when I search for that user they are showing offline. As soon as I change any user in Teams admin to be "Skype for business only" their presence shows instantly in my Teams client.

@LambyUK A small tip based on personal experience is to move away from Island mode as quick as possible. At our company we decided to put everyone in Skype only mode and gave them the option to sign up to become early adopters of Teams and then shifted them over to Teams only mode. During a period of almost a year we had this setup and didn't really experience any big issues. Before we made the final move we actually had half of the staff over 10000 users) already in Teams voluntarily.
