We are currently using Google G-Suite and want to look at Teams and may switch to Office 365 if they like Teams as we can see some other benefits of switching as well.  I am trying to work out how I can do a trial given we have the following scenarios:

  • The company is part of a group
  • We use two domains within the company
    • Group domain - setup in G-Suite lets call it group.com
    • separate domain for a division within the company also setup in G-Suite - lets call it division.com
  • We have another company within the group that is using their own domain setup lets call it mycompany.com in Office365 - if we switch they would like to use the group.com domain instead of mycompany.com

I was thinking of using a free Teams account to trial this and I understand we could convert it to a paid version of Office 365 if we decide to switch over.  My concern, given the complexity caused by multiple domains and an existing Office365 account - is which domain should I do the test on? We have a group of people in mind to be part of the trail but their email accounts are across the group.com & division.com domains.  Will the free version allow us to user multiple domains or do we need the paid version for that?

Hi @Choc-a-holic,

I guess, reading your post, it depends on the ultimate destination of the different parts of the group and whether you want to have sepearate office 365 accounts or not.

If you are merging them you would either set up in their tenant or create a new tenant for all parts of the organisation and move them into it. All domains to go in that account.

If you are keeping seperate then you would put the subdomain in a new tenant whether this is a trial or paid. The decision is where you would put the group domain because you can only have that domain in one Office 365 tenant and not all companies can use it in this circumstance. In my experience in this scenario it’s often put either in the tenant whether is likely to be the base tenant if a group ever merged, the HQ, or the lmgroup lead

Personally I would go with a 30 day trial and then move onto the paid model.

Hope that answers your question!

Best, Chris

I was under the understanding that you cannot merge an existing tenant into another tenant -am I wrong?

You can’t merge them together using some kind of automated tool or backend procedure since they don’t exist. In order to merge them you would need to cease and reprovide one tenant into another. In other words, move over the workloads manually.
