How can I screen mirror iPhone to Mac wirelessly without usb cable

My Mac has a built-in iPhone screen mirroring app but it does not work. This app requires iOS 18 and sign in with the same apple id. Unfortunately, my iPhone is still running an older iOS version. Because of that, the native option doesn't work for me.

What I want is a simple way to screen mirror my iPhone to mac wirelessly, mainly for viewing photos, demoing apps, and occasionally recording the screen. I would prefer something that works over Wi-Fi instead of using a Lightning/USB cable. I heard that AirPlay receivers might work, but not sure which option is the easiest and most stable in 2026.

If the built-in iphone mirroring app does not work, go and try a dedicated app such as SkyMirrorTo to cast iphone screen to Mac wirelessly.

UxPlay is an excellent choice to mirror iPhone to Mac. UxPlay is an open-source (GPLv3) AirPlay2 mirroring server . Its primary purpose is to act like an Apple TV for screen-mirroring with audio from iOS devices . When you want to mirror iPhone to Mac, UxPlay runs a service on your Mac that announces itself over your network as an AirPlay receiver . Your iPhone connects to it just as it would connect to an actual Apple TV.

Unlike commercial tools, UxPlay has no watermarks, no trial periods, and no hidden costs. It is developed for Linux, Windows, and macOS users who want AirPlay receiving capabilities without purchasing proprietary software.

    How It Works

Once you install and launch UxPlay on your Mac, it runs in the background as a server. On your iPhone, open Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring, and your Mac will appear as an available device. Tap it, and your iPhone's screen will instantly appear in a window on your Mac display. The mirroring includes both video and audio, streaming over your local Wi-Fi network.

It uses Apple's AirPlay2 Mirror protocol with "Legacy Pairing," meaning it supports current iPhones and works with standard Wi-Fi routers . Both devices must be on the same local area network for UxPlay to detect and connect to your iPhone.

For those comfortable with the command line, this is the best and technical method available for you mirror iPhone to Mac. This is a low-level tool that captures the raw video stream from your iPhone over USB.

How it works: It uses an open-source video streamer to pull the JPEG frames directly from the device and displays them in a web browser.

Why it fits: It completely bypasses Apple's APIs (QuickTime) and Wi-Fi protocols. It is completely free and open-source.

Limitations: It requires manual setup via Terminal. It captures the screen over USB but displays the result in a web browser.

How to mirror iPhone to Mac:

    1. Open Terminal on your Mac.

    2. Install the required dependencies using Homebrew:

    bash

brew install libusb pkg-config ffm peg

    3. You will need to clone and build two GitHub projects: ios-video-stream (to stream the video) and ios-screen-mirror (to display it).

Wireless screen mirroring makes it much easier to view photos, videos, games, presentations, or apps from your iPhone on a larger Mac display without using cables. With modern Wi-Fi technology and AirPlay-compatible apps, you can quickly connect your devices and mirror the iPhone screen in real time for work, streaming, gaming, or online meetings. However, many users still run into issues such as lag, connection failures, audio sync problems, or device compatibility limitations.

Below are some of the most common questions people ask when trying to screen mirror an iPhone to a Mac wirelessly.

FAQs About Wirelessly Mirroring iPhone to Mac

    1. Can I mirror my iPhone to Mac without a cable?

Yes. Most modern apps and built-in solutions support wireless screen mirroring over Wi-Fi. Both devices usually need to connect to the same Wi-Fi network for stable performance.

    2. Why is my iPhone not showing up on my Mac for screen mirroring?

This usually happens because Wi-Fi or Bluetooth is disabled, the devices are on different networks, or AirPlay permissions are blocked. Restarting both devices and reconnecting to the same network often fixes the issue.

    3. Does wireless iPhone mirroring reduce video quality?

It can. Wireless mirroring depends on Wi-Fi speed and signal quality. A slow or crowded network may cause lag, blurry video, or audio delay. A fast 5GHz Wi-Fi connection gives the best experience.

    4. What is the best app to screen mirror iPhone to Mac wirelessly?

Popular options include AirPlay and SkyMirrorTo. The best option depends on whether you need low latency, audio sync, recording features, or simple setup.

    5. Can I control my iPhone from Mac while mirroring?

Most wireless mirroring tools only display the iPhone screen on Mac. Some advanced apps allow limited remote control, screen recording, screenshots, or keyboard input, but full iPhone control is usually restricted by iOS security rules.

Since the built-in iPhone Mirroring app on your Mac requires a newer iOS, a completely free wireless solution does exist, but it requires using a third-party app on your Mac that acts as an AirPlay receiver. This is the most straightforward path for your situation .

An AirPlay Receiver is a software or hardware tool that allows your Mac to act as an AirPlay target, meaning you can mirror or stream content wirelessly from your iPhone to your Mac. If you want to mirror iPhone to Mac, using an AirPlay Receiver makes this process seamless and straightforward.

Simply put, when you enable an AirPlay Receiver on your Mac, your iPhone can discover it on the same Wi-Fi network, and you can select your Mac as the AirPlay device. This way, you can mirror iPhone to Mac in real-time, sharing your screen, videos, photos, or presentations without the need for cables or additional hardware.

When you mirror your screen, the audio from your iPhone (e.g., music, video sound) will also play through your Mac's speakers. The quality of your wireless mirroring experience will heavily depend on the strength and stability of your Wi-Fi network. For the best results, try to be close to your router.

If you see an "Unable to Mirror iPhone to Mac" error when using the built-in iPhone Mirroring feature, it usually happens because of compatibility, network, or Apple ID issues. Below are the most common fixes you can try.

    1. Check System Compatibility

The iPhone Mirroring feature requires newer versions of iOS and macOS.

    Minimum requirements typically include:

    iPhone: iOS 18 or later

    Mac: macOS Sequoia or later

Apple Silicon Mac or newer Intel models

If your iPhone is running iOS 17 or earlier, the built-in iPhone Mirror app will not work.

    Fix

Go to Settings → General → Software Update on your iPhone.

Update to the latest iOS version if available.

On your Mac, open System Settings → General → Software Update.

    2. Make Sure Both Devices Use the Same Apple ID

The iPhone Mirroring feature relies on your Apple ID and iCloud account.

    Check this:

Both devices must be signed in with the same Apple ID

    Two-factor authentication should be enabled

    iCloud must be active

    Fix

On iPhone: Settings → Apple ID

On Mac: System Settings → Apple ID

Confirm both devices use the same account.

If you cannot mirror your iPhone to your Mac using the built-in iPhone Mirror app, these two tricks are the best options to screen mirror iphone to mac.. Checking software versions, ensuring both devices use the same Apple ID, and restarting the devices will solve most mirroring problems.
