windows 11 thunderbolt 4 bug
Hi, I got a new Dell XPS 15 9520 (12th gen i9) few months ago. When I connect a Thunderbolt audio Interface, nothing happens, like if the port was dead. I've look in device manager and I cannot find any Thunderbolt Controller. No Thunderbolt services was running and even Intel Driver and Support Assistant cannot find any Thunderbolt controller on my laptop. I've opened a ticket with Dell. They change the motherboard, change the controller, nothing is working. After some search about this issue, I find other people with similar issue with other brand laptop (hp, Asus, Lenovo) but always with a 12th gen Intel. I made a clean install with windows 10 and the Thunderbolt controller show up immediately (model 463e). Everything works fine on windows 10. Finally, I start an update to windows 11, build 22623.730 and my thunderbolt is gone again. On intel and Dell website, both report that there's no additional driver for thunderbolt with a 12th gen CPU and windows 11. Someone else are aware of this issue?

Ensure that your BIOS is updated to the latest version. Manufacturers often release updates that improve hardware compatibility and address known bugs.

Hi,
everything is up to date. Even Microsoft firstline support tried to help me for 3 hours with no luck .
It will not recognize thunderbolt and HP docking. The USB-C works with iphone etc.

I chose an Asus B550 proart (AM4) board because it is factory provisioned with Thunderbolt IV ports/capability (no add-on card required, Intel Thunderbolt driver provided).
Under Win10 Pro, Thunderbolt worked flawlessly- this was crucial to me because I use a Universal Audio Thunderbolt III audio interface.
On 'upgrading' (ha, ha) to Win11 Pro, the new OS refused to detect my Thunderbolt interface.
I am sorely vexed, because Win10 is approaching end-of-life this year. I will therefore be forced to upgrade to 11 - which didn't see my $$$$ Thunderbolt interface!
I have updated the ProArt BIOS and my Thunderbolt driver package is up to date. But I'd hate to go through the same misery again with the same result!
What does Microsoft have to say on this matter? Has anyone got a reliable and coherent response from MS regarding Thunderbolt III & IV under Windows 11 Pro?

RowboatSolo No response from MS at all.
They seem to be intent on pushing this USB 4 implementation and ignoring everyone’s concerns. I Raised this a very long time ago, over a year in fact.
I raised a case direct from Windows. I even proved that thunderbolt runs better data transfer on a usb boot windows 10 OS v windows 11 on a very expensive top of the range Dell when it was new. Benchmarks the lot.
I tried to hack the thunderbolt drivers on Win 11 but after rebooting it reverts back to USB4 Implementation.
Their ignorance of this thread is infinite.

This is a nightmare.
MS is a) basically forcing us to update (downgrade) to Win11, and b) attempting to ram USB4 down our throats - though it doesn't even get close to Thunderbolt III or IV transfer speeds..
AND Win11 appears to have no Thunderbolt IV implementation! My last attempt proved that much.
What's to be done? Go dual boot and run Mac OS under Win10 to get around Microsoft's astounding stupidity? Never put the machine online?
That's not even remotely feasible. The licensing software for several of my music production programs is internet dependent at intervals..

I know this thread is quite old and we are now in 2024 but I have a Dell Inspiron 14 5430 with Thunderbolt 4 however Windows 11 is only picking up the TypeC Port as USB4.
In the Thunderbolt Control Center v1.0.37.0 it is showing the Controller Driver Version N/A
The app was installed from Factory.
I do not believe all the hundreds of users using Windows 11 with this problem have a hardware issue with their laptop, it seems more like Windows is not detecting correctly the Port and treating it as a standard USB4 Port.
I have installed the Intel Thunderbold 4 Controller drivers for my device and it does absolutely nothing.
In Universal Serial Bus Controllers in Device Manager I have the following:
"USB4(TM) Host Router (Microsoft)"
This device carries a Hardware ID of "A73E" (In device properties, details, hardware ID in the drop down menu) which identifies on a quick internet search as an "Intel Thunderbolt Controller"
The problem is I cannot install the Intel Thunderbolt Controller driver manually, Windows simply won't let me.
I think Microsoft need to acknowledge and fix the problem so that the correct drivers can be installed for the correct device. Without the Intel Thunderbolt Controller drivers being installed the Thunderbolt Control Center does not pick up any Thinderbolt connected devices because it does not see a controller.
If anyone with the issue is still around you may also probably see "USB4(TM) Host Router (Microsoft)" in USB Controllers in Device Manager. Check the Hardware ID in the properties and do a quick search and this is likely your Thunderbolt Controller incorrectly identified by Windows.

I Agree!! <I think Microsoft need to acknowledge and fix the problem so that the correct drivers can be installed for the correct device. We have tried "everything"!! Nothing works!

Hello Vinniemac,
I’m experiencing the same issue with the “USB4(TM) Host Router (Microsoft)” on my new ASUS ROG G16 GU603VI (2023). I recently got the laptop and bought a Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Gen 2 docking station afterward. Initially, everything worked fine, even without installing any drivers for the docking station. However, some time later (now), it suddenly stopped working out of nowhere.
I’ve tried installing drivers, updating firmware (unsuccessfully), and even reinstalled Windows 11. For a moment, I thought it might be an issue with the dock itself, so I tested the laptop with a Dell docking station, but the same problem occurred.
Did you manage to find a fix? Or is it (as others in this thread suggest) a Windows 11 issue, meaning I’d need to downgrade? If so, I’m still wondering why it worked perfectly at first…
Also, does anyone know if I can install all the ASUS applications on my laptop if I switch to Windows 10?
Thanks in advance for any responses!

So, the reply I got from Intel is that there are no Thunderbolt 4 Drivers for Windows 11 and none planned. The Microsoft USB4 Drivers are sufficient for Thunderbolt 4 operation.
The Thunderbolt Control Centre is only for Windows 10 and has no functionality on Windows 11 and there is no app support for Windows 11 planned.
That seems to be quite definitive from Intel. Quite why they cannot develop a Control Centre for Windows 11 I do not know but this will also require driver support so that connected Thunderbolt devices can be seen.
I am actually sick and tired of Intel's poor application support. Even applications for qualifying hardware does not work, like Intel Connectivity Performance Suite and the latest Application Optimization App.
I guess we are stuck with Microsoft USB4 Drivers and no Thunderbolt Control Centre.

- Truman69Copper ContributorHiliarious, as Ole MicroPlop contributes NOTHING to this Thread, as Usual...OH....Do a Clean Windows 11 Install...?? That is the Only Answer you will Get on MS Support....! STILL, Thunderbolt Support is Ignored with Windows 11 Latest Updates...! HELLO MS...ANYONE HOME...?????
- TSASA830Copper ContributorI meet the same phenomenon on Lenovo's Extreme Gen4
Although it was unstable at first, it was usable, but it stopped recognizing the connected device
I have been communicating with Lenovo support, but it has not recovered and the reply from support has also stopped - KingBillyBobCopper Contributor
Projectik I have a similar issue. I purchased a Lenova ThinkPad which had Windows 10, but it was upgraded to Windows 11 the same day. It has an 11th gen i7 with Thunderbolt 4. I never knew anything wasn't working for months until I decided I wanted to try hooking up two 4K monitors at 60HZ, and got blank screens. I have a Thunderbolt 4 workstation dock, and it hooks up 2 display port monitors, but one keeps bling on and off. I can plug 2 c-plug cables into a USB-C, and the remaining Thunderbolt 4 port on the rear of my laptop, and both monitors work fine. I purchased a OWC Thunderbolt 4 hub, and plugged it into the rear of my laptop, and nothing. I have a Dell company work laptop with the same configuration, but running Windows 10. I plug the Thunderbolt 4 hub into that, and it works.

Projectik I have opened a case with MS for a very similar issue with the Intel 12 gen Windows 11 USB4 issue. I have a Dell Vostro 7620. I purchased a Sandisk extreme pro external SSD. The external SSD device has advertised transfer speed support up to 2000 mbs, However, when connected by the USB 4 (thunderbolt 4) it only transfers at a capped 1096 mbs on crystalmark speed tests, and around 600 mbs ish realtime. When I looked in devices it appears to be recongnised as a USB3.0 device (not USB 3.2 2x2). The same issue happens on a windows 10 windows to go install with it speeds capped at 1096 mbs. But, this is the thing - The Windows 10 Thunderbolt driver runs 10 - 20% quicker 700+ mbs. This means the USB4 implementation on Windows 11 is A: not as quick as using the thunderbolt driver on Windows 10 and B: windows OS 10 & 11 doesn't run the SSD with the supported USB 3.2 2X2 functionality. I know this is not strictly a Thunderbolt issue. but the fact the thunderbolt drivers on Windows 10 run more efficently than the Win 11 USB 4 implementation is worth noting.
- MasonLi2022Copper Contributorthe external SSD support USB3.2 gen2x2 (20gbps), but I'm pretty sure that your thunderbolt port only support thunderbolt device or USB 3.2 gen2 (10gps). There is no LAPTOP support USB3.2 gen2x2 (20gbps) in the current market

Hi Mason, On the official Dell specs PDF for the Dell Vosto 7620 it states that the Thunderbolt 4 port supports up to 40 GB transfter speed and is backwards compatible with USB 3.2, 2.0 and Thunderbolt 3:
4. Thunderbolt 4.0 port with Power Delivery and DisplayPort
Supports USB4, DisplayPort 1.4, Thunderbolt 4 and also enables you to connect to an external display using a display adapter.
Provides data transfer rates of up to 40 Gbps for USB4 and Thunderbolt 4.
If the above is true from Dell official specifications I would expect the the external SSD to run in USB 3.2 2x2 on the USB4 implentation on Windows 11. However, Dell won't support 3rd party products. MS will blame Dell, and Sandisk will blame Microsoft. I'll see what they say on the case I have opened. Hopefully it's just an OS bug that will be resolved in the future.
Also if you are correct, which you probably are (and I appreciate your input and the reply), If the thunderbolt 4 conncector I have only supports 3.2 gen 2, then SSD only runs at about 2000 mbs max which is less than a quater of the (10 gbps) supported by 3.2 gen 2.

Kowleone Lenovo finally got around to telling me that I needed to upgrade firmware. I did that and it solved the problem. I still think that it's a pretty sorry state of affairs when MS breaks hardware simply by updating their OS, and doesn't bother to say anything about it. 😞

johnt69 I Totaly agree ! It appears that MS roll out changes on there OS without any decent change control or quality assurance testing nowadays. If they use TB drivers on Windows 10 and the TB drivers works more efiifenty than the new MS USB4 implementation then there is something wrong with there planning and implementation process. I'm glad you managed to sort your issue out in the end though.

Same here with the 2022 Asus ROG M16. Sad to see that the thunderbolt port just doesn't work with the 12th gen intel CPU yet these companies can continue to advertise a thunderbolt 4 port when it's inoperable. I would hope we can at least see some acknowledgement form Intel/Microsoft/etc.
- MasonLi2022Copper Contributor
- MasonLi2022Copper Contributoractually it does work, even without thunderbolt controller(or we just can't see it). I tried JHL7440 SSD enclosure with ssd or egpu, all worked very well.

MasonLi2022 it's working for me too, it's weird but it worked after 22H2
