'Update your sign-in technology before September 16th, 2024 to maintain email access'.
Hi I received this message :
"The safety and security of your information is top priority for Microsoft. To help keep your account secure, Microsoft will no longer support the use of third-party email and calendar apps which ask you to sign in with only your Microsoft Account username and password. To keep you safe you will need to use a mail or calendar app which supports Microsoft’s modern authentication methods. If you do not act, your third-party email apps will no longer be able to access your Outlook.com, Hotmail or Live.com email address on September 16th".
I am trying to work out how to rectify the issue but am really confused. If anyone could help I would be really grateful. My email is a live.co.uk account and I just click on the blue mail envelope to access it from my laptop/phone etc. Do I need to have an entirely new account or is there way to keep this account but update it as the email I think suggests? Many thanks in advance.
- Your account will continue working. Microsoft is changing the way you login to it, adding some additional protections as part of the process. As some email clients do not support the required protocols/methods to enable such protection, they will stop working after Microsoft implements the changes. If you use an email app that already supports this, you will not be affected, at most you might have to reauthenticate.
If you app is not supported, you might have to look for alternative. Worst case scenario, you can always use the browser to open your account. There are some generic instructions that you can follow here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/modern-authentication-methods-now-needed-to-continue-syncing-outlook-email-in-non-microsoft-email-apps-c5d65390-9676-4763-b41f-d7986499a90d
You should also take this opportunity to examine the security configuration for your account and make sure to add at least one multi-factor authentication method, or a passkey.- BjornBenCopper Contributor
Hi, does this mean that also app passwords will stop working? I am using a few for Outlook SMTP service.Regards,
Bjorn
- AlexisPERRCopper ContributorNobody replied about the app password support ?
I use smtp-mail.outlook.com to send auto mails from some devices like RAID controller or Printers, and since 2020-09-16 it doesn't work anymore. Are all these devices abandoned by Microsoft ? That's brutal.

So from this notification all outlook versions prior to outlook21 will be made redundant.
"Outlook 2007, Outlook 2010, Outlook 2013, Outlook 2016 MSI, Outlook 2019 LTSC. Any release of Outlook Desktop with a version less than 11601.10000 does not support Modern Authentication for Outlook.com."
So the big push to get everybody to share their data online.

Hi VasilMichev
Thanks so much for the response, that is really helpful. I know this may be a really daft question but how do I work out what app/s I can use then to access my email account?
- The article I linked to above list the apps that can be used. For first-party apps, Outlook is available on Windows and mobile, or via the browser. If you prefer a third-party app, use Thunderbird or Apple Mail, both support Modern authentication. There is no exhaustive list of third-party apps, as those are not supported by Microsoft.
Hi all,
I created a supporting video about this topic, targeting non-tech-savvy users. In this video, I explained:
- What modern authentication is,
- What to expect, and
- Guide you to Microsoft’s resources
So that you can take action before September 16th.

Thank you very much for your video.
So if I understanded correctly, MS are forcing users onto a subscription service to continue to use Outlook on desktop. Office/outlook365 and instead of using desktop based storage i.e. PST and OST file archives in favour of less secure cloud based storage. Thanks.

For Desktop users, Outlook supports Modern Authentication in all current Microsoft 365 subscription SKUs and Outlook 2021 LTSC (any SKU with build 11601.10000 or higher).Modern Authentication is not supported if your Outlook is configured to connect to Outlook.com using POP/IMAP or SMTP.
Option 1: Get a new Outlook Email App
Option 2: Instead of using POP/IMAP and SMTP, create a new Outlook Desktop profile. Create an Outlook profile - Microsoft Support
- sashmazzCopper ContributorSo does simply adding my "hotmail" account to the Outlook app on my iPhone solve this issue? I was originally using it in Apple Mail on my iPhone. Is there any other action I need to take?
My apologies for the delay. The links below show users how to update the Outlook App on their mobile devices.

- dadavies9Copper ContributorI've had the same message, but my Hotmail emails prematurely stopped downloading on 9th July! How can I get my emails to download onto my desktop again?
- JoanTurner152Copper ContributorGo to settings/ accounts/ have outlook as primary/change mail days to sync- to no limit.
- LozBozCopper ContributorI not sure MS have got all the support in place to support this.
Looking at Outlook on Android there doesn't seem to be any OAuth2 support for IMAP/SMTP.
And before folks ask I need to keep these because I send email via my ISP's SMTP server but my INBOX is OUTLOOK.COM. - sashmazzCopper ContributorHello,
I received this email message as well indicating that I may lose access to my email account after September 16, 2024.
I use an email address that ends in "hotmail.com". Before I received this alert, I was using the Apple Mail app on my phone. Today I added this email account to my Outlook mail app. Is this all I need to do so that I don't lose access to this email account and the OneDrive that is linked to it?
Thanks. - tvdwouwCopper Contributor
I strongly believe email security and accounts being hacked have nothing to do with the current MS move. The real problem is the huge amount of spam and phishing mails - let MS try to solve that to serve customers!
Stopping SMTP/POP and IMAP support is simply silly.
I am still on Windows Live Mail and although it has it quirks, I found it better, easier and faster with some great unique features than all other programs I have tried out. And of the many email accounts I used in the past, I never got hacked.
If we look at the mail programs that MS published over the years, it looks like "panic football" at best, inconsistent and confusing many customers - see the above reactions...
- marrajonCopper ContributorAnother not working anymore connection is pop connection from gmail, but you can use gmailfy option, although this option is like an IMAP connection, it synchronizes folders too.
