'Update your sign-in technology before September 16th, 2024 to maintain email access'.
If you app is not supported, you might have to look for alternative. Worst case scenario, you can always use the browser to open your account. There are some generic instructions that you can follow here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/modern-authentication-methods-now-needed-to-continue-syncing-outlook-email-in-non-microsoft-email-apps-c5d65390-9676-4763-b41f-d7986499a90d
You should also take this opportunity to examine the security configuration for your account and make sure to add at least one multi-factor authentication method, or a passkey.
- ZeeOhSixSep 12, 2024Copper ContributorIt's not clear to me exactly what this new sign-in requirement effects.
1) Does this new sign-in requirements effect Microsoft Hotmail using "outlook.live.com" in a web browser?
2) Does this new sign-in requirement effect the current Android Outlook email app? - sashmazzAug 26, 2024Copper ContributorVasilMichev So logging into my hotmail account through outlook sign-in in safari browser will still work?
I simply deleted my hotmail account from my Apple Mail app on my mobile device and added this same account to my Outlook app. Is that all I need to do? Do I need the "Authenticator" app as well?
I want to make sure I don't lose any of my email and associated documents on OneDrive.
Thanks for your help.- Teresa_CyrusAug 26, 2024MVP

Hi, does this mean that also app passwords will stop working? I am using a few for Outlook SMTP service.Regards,
Bjorn
- AlexisPERROct 02, 2024Copper ContributorNobody replied about the app password support ?
I use smtp-mail.outlook.com to send auto mails from some devices like RAID controller or Printers, and since 2020-09-16 it doesn't work anymore. Are all these devices abandoned by Microsoft ? That's brutal.

Hi VasilMichev
Thanks so much for the response, that is really helpful. I know this may be a really daft question but how do I work out what app/s I can use then to access my email account?
- VasilMichevJul 03, 2024MVPThe article I linked to above list the apps that can be used. For first-party apps, Outlook is available on Windows and mobile, or via the browser. If you prefer a third-party app, use Thunderbird or Apple Mail, both support Modern authentication. There is no exhaustive list of third-party apps, as those are not supported by Microsoft.

So from this notification all outlook versions prior to outlook21 will be made redundant.
"Outlook 2007, Outlook 2010, Outlook 2013, Outlook 2016 MSI, Outlook 2019 LTSC. Any release of Outlook Desktop with a version less than 11601.10000 does not support Modern Authentication for Outlook.com."
So the big push to get everybody to share their data online.
