New Outlook Comes With New Workflows: What Is Still Missing for You?

As a reminder, in March 2027, Enterprise organizations will enter the opt-out stage (Message ID 949965), where New Outlook becomes the default with the option to return to Classic Outlook. That is not too far away, especially if you need time to get your workflows and systems in place.

That is why I keep coming back to this:

New Outlook comes with new workflows.

So I’m curious about where New Outlook workflows still fall short for you.

A lot has changed. Users now have mail merge, Quick Parts, Unified Inbox, and partial PST support, with Advanced Mail Merge also on the way. New Outlook also has 30+ features and capabilities that are not available in Classic Outlook.

What do you still do in Classic Outlook that you cannot accomplish, or cannot accomplish well, in New Outlook today?

And if you tried New Outlook a year or two ago and went back to Classic Outlook, I’d be especially interested in what is still keeping you there now.

I’m not looking for “I hate New Outlook.” I already know plenty of people do.

I want to know the specific feature or workflow that still matters to you.

    I published a video recapping what Classic Outlook users are saying about New Outlook's missing features. Also, see my responses to your questions below. 

    • No drag & copy for (older) appointments
      It is not possible to drag and copy existing appointments, such as Regular maintenance or Lunch.
      TBC: You are correct. You can change to Month View and drag and drop within the same month. Since there is no monthly scrolling, you can't drag beyond the current month.

    • No keyboard shortcuts for categories
      Users cannot assign keyboard shortcuts to categories (e.g., setting F2 for Regular maintenance).
      TBC: Category shortcuts have changed to Ctrl+F2 through Ctrl+F12.

    • Scheduling Assistant reduces available screen space
      When creating or editing an appointment, the Scheduling Assistant remains fixed on the right side of the screen, which takes up a significant portion of the workspace.
      TBC: Scheduling Assistant has been renamed to Scheduler. You can open it to full screen.
      If you mean the Agenda view, yes, it is a fixed view. Alternatively, you can click the Agenda view double-headed arrow to open the scheduler in full screen. If you want the ability to adjust the width, please provide Microsoft with feedback for consideration. 

    • Save shortcut closes appointment
      Using CTRL+S to save an appointment automatically closes the window, even if the user intends to continue editing after save.
      TBC: Great feedback. You can vote on this existing feedback submitted to Microsoft. 

    • Missing search function
      The option to search the calendar by Subject or Notes fields is no longer available.
      TBC: In Calendar View, I can search by people, subject, attachments, and keywords in the description/notes area via the Search Bar.  

    • Support for PST-files is limited.
      TBC: Yes, PST files are partially supported. Good news: Calendar and Contact PST Import were rolled out in June 2026. I have not tested it yet. I will be publishing a video soon. In the meantime, here are a couple of videos showing what you can do as new functionality rolls out.

    • Support for multiple Shared mailboxes is limited.
      TBC: Agreed

    • Changing the From address after you compose an email opens a new blank email.
      TBC: This behavior was by design to prevent accidentally sending an email from and to the wrong person. When it was first rolled out, I experienced sending details to the wrong person. That could've been a real problem with confidential information.
