No private channel option on teams

I have been trying to work out how to create private channels on teams however it seems the option is unavailable. Looking at the settings of the team, the option is enabled but not when I create a new channel.

Using version 1.3.00.362 desktop app.

Is it because I have a corporate O365 subscription?

    Hey! lneale

I'm currently on  Version 1.3.00.362 and I have no issues on creating Private Channel.

When I checked the Teams Admin portal, it had Create Private Channels option Enabled.

So I assume the Policy is disabled by the Organization. It's best to get the policy settings checked.

    Cheers!

lneale Unless it's an unexpected issue (bug), going by the documentation, as well as the team settings for members the other place that could be preventing private channel creation is a policy.

Worth ruling it out anyway (org-wide or any custom policy), as this I believe would affect owners too:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-US/microsoftteams/teams-policies

I'd also try from the web version, in case that makes any difference, also is it the same in a different team.

Cian Allner in my instance I am using version 1.3.00.2160 (desktop app) and I don't see the option to make a channel private at all. Whether I try to make a channel private when I first add a channel or after the channel has been created and I click on the "..."

Also in the manage team > settings section I see the "Allow members to create private channels" is enabled. So I really don't understand why I don't see the option to create private channels.

Lastly, I don't see "New Teams Policy" in my Teams. How did you get there? (referencing your screenshot).

      Thanks!

alavios Check the Microsoft Teams admin center - https://admin.teams.microsoft.com/, expand Teams on the lefthand navigation, then Teams policies.  There will be at least a Global (Org-wide default) policy, this, if it has been configured by an administrator, will turn off Private Channels globally or there could be a custom policy also which has been scoped with a set of users to turn off Private channel creation.

"As an admin, you can use teams policies in Microsoft Teams to control what users in your organization can do in teams and channels. For example, you can set whether users are allowed to discover private teams in search results and in the team gallery and whether users are allowed to create private channels."

        https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/MicrosoftTeams/teams-policies

    • As mentioned by Ciam, check if PC has been disabled in your organization....I have the same version of Teams Client and I can create PC with no problems

alavios its very frustrating. I am being asked by a lot of people in my organisation for this feature. I also can not find any help topics on this issue.

Hopefully This will get a response.

lneale Same here. I have found documentation that says it's possible but I don't see the privacy option at all when I try to create a channel. I found this YouTube video that shows someone creating a private channel but, again, I don't see the privacy section at all when I create a channel. Even though I am an owner in my own Teams.
