Drop your files here box won't go away
My normal chat bar has been replaced by the file sharing bar. How do I return to a normal chat bar??
Vivek01
I just had the same issue, my fix (for now) has been dragging an item into the chat, pressing the X on the following prompt.
I hope this helps.
With my issue, it seems to happen when you click and drag a file to a browser.

I found a simpler solution as got this problem for the first time this morning.
I clicked on the Files icon on the left, then clicked back on the Chat icon and it went back to normal 🙂
- Jean-Philippe Desloges-BergeronCopper Contributorworking for me thank!

it's 2023 and the bug is still persisting
- SureshMJCopper Contributor
I was going to say so too ... 2023 !! Almost 2 years and we are still having the issue. Solving technically at the user end is not an issue such as with clear cache, re-login etc... but it is a BUG!!
Of course in a longer list of Priority bugs, this may not appear as priority, but shld be a simple fix!! Open community if engaged, be able to fix it in minutes. Anyways, felt sharing that it is STILL happening Microsoft Team- Shailesh_kv

UPDATE: The fix is undergoing final tests and should be available the public in early February.
Thanks everyone for the patience!

Just drop any files in a message bar and send it,
then message tab gets restored
- AndrePKIIron Contributor
I must have hit some shortcut key (I just can't find which - it is not listed when pressing Ctrl-'.') It is persistent between sessions - remember you really have to exit Teams by clicking Quit, not just close the app). Just add a dummy file and then not send it works for me. Annoyingggggg....
- @all For those still experiencing this issue a fix will be rolled out during January.
- Joshua BinesIron ContributorTesting looks positive for me on this release.
Microsoft Teams Version 1.5.00.36367 (64-bit). It was last updated on 23/01/2023.

I was looking for a solution for this same issue. I was also clicking around and discovered that if you click Pop out chat in the top right corner the issue does not extend to the new window.
- DamienOSheaSeqwaterCopper ContributorDecember 13, 2022 - I google the 'Drop your files here.' error and find that Microsoft have known about this fault for more than 1-year and have failed to do any meaningful work to resolve the problem. We maintain over 1,000 Teams Users for our org and this issue is happening more and more often.
Pernille-Eskebo, perhaps re-divert some resources from your Windows 12 project to get Teams working?! - PenitentMan85Brass ContributorUPDATE: Microsoft Engineer confirmed that this has been identified and will be patched on December 15th. They actually had me walk them through re-creating it.
Thanks to everyone who stayed active on this thread and didn't let it die. Hopefully this will all be behind us after December 15th. Until then: F1 key is the fastest workaround.- Joshua BinesIron Contributor
I'm told its fixed in this release and it's meant to be out in the wild already.

- DamienOSheaSeqwaterCopper ContributorBut the thread started November 2021... What about all the patches since then? =P
PS - You have Microsoft Teams Version 1.5.00.33362 (64-bit). It was last updated on 12/12/2022.
My Post was 13/12/2022 - The day after updating. Proving unequivocally, that Microsoft did sweet F.A. to resolve this bug... again.
- wizardhawkCopper Contributor
Good news on the coming fix.
While F1 does clear it, I've also found just trying to drag a random image in your chat window down to it also clears it which is faster for me.
Slightly dragging one of those images causes it, and full dragging it down to your chat box makes it go away.
- SirRealityCopper ContributorYou, sir, are a steely-eyed missile man! Thanks for seeing it through to the finish line. You will prevent the pulling out of much hair.
- PenitentMan85Brass ContributorThank you SirReality. The reality is, every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end. ::piano plays::

The long-term fix to this problem is to clear the Teams cache. The process varies a bit, depending on what device you are using Teams on. For example, on an Android device you would follow these steps:
"How to clear Microsoft Teams' cache on an Android device- Open the Settings app and tap Storage, and then Apps.
- Find Teams in the list of apps and tap it.
- Select the Clear cache option. "

Matty_Boy You may have missed the clarification that it is a recurring issue for some users even after clearing the Teams cache. This is confirmed in my organization.
- NateL1010Brass Contributor
Agreed, even if clearing the cache fixes it, that's a workaround, not a solution or long-term fix. It still doesn't explain why it breaks in the first place and requires the cache to be cleared. The true root cause hasn't been identified yet.
- Tim FarmerBrass ContributorWe are now seeing this spread throughout our organization. The temp fix and recurrence of issue is insufficient for a professional enterprise solution.

I just opened a support case using the help & support link in the Office 365 admin portal with the subject line "Drop your files here" and I linked to this thread in the case. Maybe if we all do the same, this issue will start to get some attention.
- PenitentMan85Brass ContributorHave you all had any update from the ticket you opened? I just opened a ticket now and included a link to this thread. Thanks.1

Workaround - use the pop-out button in the upper right until you have time to restart Teams.
