| A successful Google Workspace to Microsoft 365 migration requires planning beyond just email. I recommend focusing on the following aspects: 1. Prepare identities: Map Google users, aliases, and Groups to the appropriate Microsoft 365 accounts and groups. Confirm target accounts, licensing, and permissions before migration. 2. Plan each workload separately: Use Exchange Online's automated migration for supported mail, rules, calendars, and contacts. Use Migration Manager to move personal Drive content to OneDrive and shared content to SharePoint or Teams. 3. Identify inherent limitations: Shared calendars, room bookings, event colors, some contact fields, and Google-native file conversions may require additional handling. Review Drive identity mappings and permission settings before migration. 4. Test coexistence and cutover: For staged migrations, validate mail flow between both platforms, complete the final synchronization, and test internal and external delivery after DNS changes. 5. Run a representative pilot: Include users with large mailboxes, delegated access, shared calendars, and complex Drive permissions. Validate data, permissions, mobile access, and business applications before expanding the migration. One last recommendation: Design the destination structure and identity mapping before moving data. A representative pilot, documented cutover plan, and post-migration validation will help reduce disruption and avoid preventable issues. |
