How to Run App as Administrator by Default in Windows 11
How to Run App as Administrator by Default in Windows 11
1. When you've located the file, right-click it to open its context menu. Then, select "Properties."
2. Navigate to the "Compatibility" tab.
(external link removed by moderator)
3. Check the option next to "Run this Program as Administrator."
4. To apply this new choice, click "Apply" and then "OK" to exit the window.
- arich1580Copper ContributorFor people that can't see a "Compatibility" tab in Properties:
1. Make sure you're right-clicking on the actual .exe file, not the shortcut from the Start menu.
2. If you still can't see it, right-click on the .exe file again, choose "More options" and then choose "Troubleshoot Compaibility". Tick "The program requires additional permissions" as you go through the compatibility wizard, test the program, and save the outcome. (Which stores settings in the registry.)- BronThulkeCopper Contributorarich1580 Unfortunately, this does not work anymore.
At some point the troubleshooter has been changed to open a Help program, and it drops all knowledge of the .exe file that you had run the troubleshooter for.
You then go through the list of programs to run the compatibility troubleshooter for, which it presents a limited list of programs for, and in my case it is for Visual Studio (devenv.exe), it does not come up in any list, so you have to keep clicking "None of the above". Then finally it asks "Is it a Windows Desktop application?" to which you say "yes", and then it instructs you to do the same thing you just did to run the "Troubleshoot compatibility" tool for the specific EXE.
I can confirm, also that there is definitely on "Compatibility" test when you go to the Properties for the .exe file.
So when you use the quick tasks shortcuts to open any previously accessed .sln files in Visual Studio from the task bar, those do not run as admin, even if you've configured the main Visual Studio task bar shortcut to run as admin.
This is all exactly as per other people's complaints in these comments, and Microsoft need to fix this ASAP, as it's a degradation of capabilities.- StevenBirkesCopper Contributor
BronThulke I have found a work around on Windows 11. Search for "Run programs made for previous versions of Windows" in the start menu. This will launch the old Troubleshooter.
- AmiriooimBrass ContributorWhat is the difference comparing to the right click from run as administrator?
- NaominyCopper ContributorThat's a good theme.
- DianiaCopper ContributorThanks for the tip. It is very helpful!
- ChandlereCopper ContributorIs it safe to grant admin permission when some app asks?
- DianiaCopper ContributorIt depends on what kind of app it is. For popular & famous app, it is ok to go!
- Nobel_BaynesIron ContributorWhy some of the app asks for admin permission when opening it up? Is this a normal behaviour?
- cccruzeniaCopper ContributorThis is something related to app packaging software. If it is running as admin, the packed app will requires admin permission as well.

Where is it?
- Khant_Ko_KoCopper ContributorYou can easily right-click the Icon from taskbar. Then right-click the "visual studio xxxx", choose "Properties". Go to "Shortcut" tab. Then click "Advanced...". There you can see "Run as admin" checkbox.

I have a nice program called QuickLook that I simply want installed in Program Files instead of User/myname/AppData which I think is absolutely retarded.
So rather than give admin access to the c:/program files/ directory to every app I want to install, I would like to run the installer as Admin. This should grant RW access to the program files directory.
I can't find the Run As Admin option in the context menu and can't set the compatibility mode settings they are greyed out. Is it impossible to run an .msi file as admin? Any suggestions - Zombie13x33Copper Contributor
Hello and good day. I have done what the instructions said and it's still asking for permission when I start the game. It's a game from STEAM. I have it downloaded on my external HD that's duck taped to my $1600 asus gaming laptop lol. I also have not done a restart as I had just done one literally right before and didn't think of it until typing this... I'm having no issues at the moment either except I would like to have this permission thing changed for this one game. It's the only game that asks for it every time so it's just annoying I guess. I learned I could do this from doing a Google search. Maybe I'll go back into the properties and take a second look or just try again. I just don't want to go poking around and mess things up by poking aroundand tryingto change things. Thanks for reading and taking the time to respond if you do. I did not even look at the date from the original post but you folks are usually pretty fast to respond considering the sheer size of the company and its customer base. Thanks.
