Blocking external sharing: are prior shares "unshared"?

Copper Contributor

Currently, we're using this setting:

  • Allow sharing to authenticated external users and using anonymous access links

Let's say we've got some documents that are currently shared externally. If I now switch the setting to one of these more restrictive settings:

  • Don't allow sharing outside your organization
  • Allow sharing only with the external users that already exist in your organization's directory

...what happens to those documents that were previously shared externally? Do they get "grandfathered-in" and remain shared externally or do they now become unshared?

Thank you!

The documents become inaccessible, but they remain shared "behind the scenes".

In fact, if you subsequently change the setting, they become accessible again.

Salvatore, thank you for your reply. Just to make sure I understood, I'd like to reiterate my understanding. Do you mean to say:

The global setting will instantly make all previously shared documents inaccessible. As long as external sharing is globally disallowed, no user can override that setting, e.g. share any documents. If, however, at a future time, the global setting is changed back to once again allow external sharing - then those documents that were originally shared will now be shared once again.

Did I get that right?
