Unable to delete a private channel
Hi
I seem to be unable to delete a private channel after having created a private channel for testing.
The channel has no content and only one additional user, that was added after I found that it could not be deleted. The other user is also owner and can't delete it either. The channel was created 1 week ago, so it should be possible by now?

I have an open case with MS on this and they told me it is a bug, but are not publicly announcing it. Said MS Engineering can take 1-2 months to fix.
However, the work around is that you can delete the private channels from the Teams mobile app on the iPhone or Android.

Hello Anthony,
Unfortunately this is not updated on any of the public articles.
As per the Engineering Team it might take 1-2 months to fix this bug.
Thank you for choosing Microsoft support.

Thanks for the update, Syed.
However, in the link you provided, there are no responses from Microsoft that this is a bug or that it’s being worked on. All the comments are from customers reporting the problem.
Is there an official statement from Microsoft in regards to this bug that is publicly available?
If I send this link to other people in my organization that are having the issue, they are going to ask for the Microsoft response, not other customers saying that they are also having the same problem.

I just tried to delete a channel from the Android app, but it failed.

If you delete the private channel from mobile, the system deletes "only" the channel, the SharePoint site collection is still reachable via URL.

AnthonyWheat Thanks for the workaround, would have never thought of that!

I have the same problem. Created private channel within Group. and after 5 mins, try deleting it.
We couldn’t delete the test channel. Try deleting it again.

Hi,
Our Tenant has a retention policy enabled for Sharepoint, so it is not possible to delete a private channel from a Teams.
I tested it by removing the private channel site from the retention policy and was able to delete it from Teams.
Therefore, if the retention policy is enabled for Sharepoint, you cannot delete a private channel without first removing it from retention.
josegfl hi Jose, how did you exclude teams site collection from the sharepoint Lists configured for a retention policy?
Thanks
- zhiyuan024Copper ContributorWe also faced this issue as our tenant has applied retention policy for all Sharepoint online sites. We are now verifying if we can delete the private channel when this retention policy is disabled.

zhiyuan024 Am having the same issue, so will also need to check our retention policy, does see buggy though. I am at a meeting with Microsoft on Monday, and was going to raise this direct with them on site
- Sandra ElliottCopper ContributorWas Microsoft able to provide any feedback at your meeting on this?
- My guess is you have all your /sites/ under retention policy. So it cannot delete the underlying SharePoint site due to that since it tries to delete it and it can’t. Unlike deleting a group keeps the site around and isn’t reliant on that delete to complete. I don’t think it’s intended but think I saw another person having the same issue so figured it could be related.
Would still report to Microsoft.
Let us know if the sites are under retention or hold.- Scott PrestonIron Contributor
We are seeing this in our tenant and we have retention of sites enabled. Might report it to Microsoft as well as I'm guessing this could be a bug.
