SharePoint list looks like is opened in Microsoft List even if is fact opened in SharePoint.
Hello!
In our company we have a few users for which when they open a SharePoint lists, the lists look like is opened in Microsoft list. (Image example at the end)
Besides the fact that we cannot have a standard procedure, the lists in Microsoft list also do not support all JSON code applied to the list formatting.
Does someone has any idea how this can be solved? We need for all the users to have the lists opened in the SharePoint list experience and not the Microsoft list.
I mention that I have experimented and found the following things:
1) I tried on different browsers, Edge and Chrome, the issue persists.
2) I tried on different computers, for example My account has no issues on my computer, or on his computer but his account has the issue on my computer and his.
3) The list is not opened in the MS List, is opened in SharePoint but it looks exactly like one opened in MS list, with the small list icon, the views in tabular form positioned horizontally and not vertically grouped like is the norm in SharePoint.
4) For the time being there are only 2 people with this issue in our company. (only tested this with 15 other people)
5) After I have applied the fix mentioned here (Site owners can navigate to the Navigation Elements settings page and configure a new setting called “Lists in Sites”, which will enable lists to always open in their associated SharePoint site) I can see a difference in behavior when I (my account that has no issue) opens the list in MS List, is forcing the list to behave like in SharePoint even though is opened in MS List, and in SharePoint is behaving normal. But unfortunately for him this is doing nothing, the issue persists.
6) This does not affect all the lists, if a list was created from excel it does not have this issue, but if the list was created by any other means it will have the issue.
7) Other people with the same permission level do not experience this issue, only him.
😎 All of us have the same Microsoft 365 E3 licence.
9) The 2 people that have this issues have their Microsoft accounts created/attributed to them at a few years gap.
In the end the only logical explication that I was able to find is that this issue is triggered at a user level without any link to the settings of the main site, but I was unable to find any setting in the user account that refers to the list behavior
For other people who read this post please give a like and add a comment if you also have this issue.
This way is more likely that a Microsoft employee will step in if they know that there are more people with this issue.

This update is breaking any list I have with JSON formatting. I thought the whole idea of moving from CSS customization to JSON customization was to eliminate these types of issues. This is an unacceptable lack of response by Microsoft.

This issue has affected the JSON formulas I have in a few of my List columns, too. To add to the frustration, some of these columns are used to trigger notifications created through Power Automate.
CraigYYC - have you heard of a work around for the JSON? Or does anyone have suggests to get these formulas to work again in Lists? Would I have to upload an Excel version of the List to see these formulas again?
Thanks!
- Dev_OTALIACopper ContributorCompany is back to work this morning and I have just encountered the damages too. Microsoft team this in unacceptable. Not even a new UI test trials as you do most of the time to adapt our environment ? UNACCEPTABLE !

The rollout just hit our tenant in early July 2024. Not all lists have converted yet. I have at least one that I've encountered and all Site navigation is gone. While others the Quick Launch and Hub navigation remain. This is a problem for that one site list. Only the back button in the browser is a way to get back to the site. MC709979 stated: All Lists in SharePoint sites will maintain the SharePoint site's chrome, theming, and navigation., but this is not the case for our lists in a SharePoint site. The Quick Launch and all site navigation is gone as the user is dumped into the List App browser interface. Only way back to the Team Site is to use the browser back button. VERY poor UX ...
- TryautomationCopper ContributorWe are also having the same problem.
But, Microsoft says the Sharepoint status is normal.
I hope the problem will be resolved soon.- Johnny0000Brass Contributor
Dear All,
Unfortunately as many of us had anticipated this issue is not a bug but a new update made by Microsoft, after one month of going back and forth with the Microsoft support team I have finally received the conclusion to all my "work", below you can find the email from them:
"
Thanks a lot for your patience on the issue.
After checking with the tech advisor team, we'd like to inform you about a recent update to Microsoft SharePoint Lists that may have affected your experience.
Issue: You may have noticed that when opening a SharePoint list, it appears similar to how lists are displayed in Microsoft Lists. Specifically, the list opens in SharePoint but has the following characteristics:
- It resembles a Microsoft List with the small list icon.
- Views are displayed in a tabular form, positioned horizontally instead of the usual vertically grouped format in SharePoint.
Reason: This change is due to an update for Microsoft SharePoint Lists aimed at enhancing performance and introducing new features such as ratings, direct image uploads, real-time collaboration visibility, and view switching. The rollout of this update began in February 2024 and is expected to be completed by June 2024. For further details, you can refer to the official announcement https://admin.microsoft.com/Adminportal/Home?#/MessageCenter/:/messages/MC709979.
Impact: These improvements are designed to enhance the overall performance of Lists in Microsoft SharePoint and bring additional features. As a result, users in affected tenants will notice these updates when browsing lists in SharePoint sites, the Lists progressive web app (PWA), and Lists in Teams.
Unfortunately, this new feature update cannot be rolled back. We understand that this may cause some inconvenience or confusion, and we seek your kind understanding during this transition.
If you have any questions or require further assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.
Once again, thank you for your patience and understanding.
"Sooner of later the Power App workaround will also be "implemented" in this update.
Good luck to everyone in the search of a workaround.
Wish you all the best!
- Probably not ideal, but while this is getting worked out, maybe you could create a SP page and embed the list and view there, share that URL in the navigation.

Hello Kelly_Edinger,
Thank you for your reply, that is the only thing that I did not test 😁, now that your idea is working, even though I cannot use it in practice for multiple reasons, is making this issue even more complicated, so is not a user setting, is just a strange bug that is affecting just some users for some god knows reason.
The more I look at this issue the less sense it makes.
To put gas on the fire, I have granted him owner access and created the "web part" list from his account on the main page and it looks OK. so the web part/Embedded list does not inherit the "settings" of the user who created it, or not even the one who is viewing it.

Hello All, for now this is just a hypothesis but I think this issue was triggered when Microsoft made their monthly updates to SharePoint.
With the help of others from the forum we managed to pin-point that for some of us the issue started in the second week of May.
and for others in April.
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/sharepoint-list-view-ui-is-changed-to-microsoft/3e45ff3b-e078-4599-920d-25e2f36d584f?page=1
Here you can find the link with all the updates that Microsoft has done in SharePoint.
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdates/sharepoint-updates
So given this new information I would assume that if they will not fix this with the update from June then most likely in June we will have other people where this issue will manifest, all of the updates in the past months took place in the second week of each month.
AmberSchiffer and ABTOUCC if you want we can move to this thread, is a new one that I have opened and is not marked as "solved" like the one that we have used.
- GrizzlyBunnyBrass ContributorWe have the same issue and I just created a post regarding this.
We hate this new list as it is so buggy (form conditional formatting doesn't work as expected, can't sort/filter columns, column formatting has changed and isn't consistent across users, items opens in a small pop-up instead of taking 3/4th of the screen from the right etc).
We can't find an option to roll back and it is very frustrating. Let us know if you find a fix 😞 Is targeted tenant release options set for these users who are having the issues? Check: Set up the Standard or Targeted release options
Are those users from a specific region/country where Microsoft is releasing any new feature for SharePoint / Microsoft Lists?
You can also raise a support ticket with Microsoft directly and report this behavior, follow: Get support for Microsoft 365 - Online support
Please click Mark as Best Response & Like if my post helped you to solve your issue. This will help others to find the correct solution easily. It also closes the item. If the post was useful in other ways, please consider giving it Like.

Hello ganeshsanap,
The target tenant release option is set to "Standard Release for everybody".
The Region settings for Data Usage are set the same with the rest of the users that have no issue.
The IT admin was unable to find any difference between the accounts of this 2 users with the issue and my account with no issue.
