How to Stop SharePoint Lists from opening in Microsoft Lists?
- Sep 19, 2023
Hi Kathryn Birstein,
By default, SharePoint lists will open in the Microsoft Lists app. According to the SharePoint admin message centre, Site owners can navigate to the Navigation Elements settings page and configure a new setting called “Lists in Sites”, which will enable lists to always open in their associated SharePoint site.
you can try to change this by using classic SharePoint setting, by navigating https://{tenantname}.sharepoint.com/sites/{sitename}/_layouts/15/navoptions.aspx
or going to the SharePoint Site classic settings and changing Navigation elements. Site owners can navigate to the Navigation Elements settings page and configure a new setting called “Lists in Sites”, which will enable lists to always open in their associated SharePoint site.

LeonPavesic Hi. I hace the same issue since yesterday, and so far it only happens to me, not anyone else. I have tried your solution but it didn't work out 😞 Any other tip? Thanks in advance.
It doesn't seem to be switching to the LISTS environment so much as displaying within SharePoint as it would if opened in LISTS. Biggest problem being that this has caused all my multi-select lookup fields to stop recognizing each entry with unique links. Very frustrating.

Hello,
One guy in our company has the same issue and the fix mentioned here is not working, there are a few things that I need to mention, I hope this will help.
1) I tried on different browsers, Edge and Chrome, the issue persists.
2) I tried on different computers, for example My account has no issues on my computer, or on his computer but his account has the issue on my computer and his.
3) The list is not opened in the MS List, is opened in SharePoint but it looks exactly like one opened in MS list, with the small list icon, the views in tabular form positioned horizontally and not vertically grouped like is the norm in SharePoint.
4) For the time being he is the only one with this issue in our company. (only tested this with 5 other people)
5) After I have applied the fix mentioned here I can see a difference in behavior when I (my account that has no issue) opens the list in MS List, is forcing the list to behave like in SharePoint even though is opened in MS List, and in SharePoint is behaving normal. But unfortunately for him this is doing nothing, the issue persists.
6) This does not affect all the lists, if a list was created from excel it does not have this issue, but if the list was created by any other means it will have the issue.
7) Other people with the same permission level do not experience this issue, only him.
😎All of us have the same Microsoft 365 E3 licence.
I came to the conclusion that this is a user issue.
But unfortunately I was not able to find any setting in the user account in regards to lists, either MS lists or SharePoint lists.
For us this is a big issue, because his SharePoint list is opened in MS list through SharePoint and some JSON formatting applied to the list is not functioning properly.
I really hope that a Microsoft employ will step in to come with a fix for this.LeonPavesic can you help us with this?
- ABTOUCCMay 28, 2024Copper ContributorWe're having precisely the same issue as Johnny0000. Single user getting an embedded view of Lists in the SharePoint page so it's not conforming to any of the formatting or filters we have set up. She is managing but her use of the list is part of her core responsibilities, and I'm concerned that others' access to the list might be affected long term. The Navigation Elements pane no longer shows the "Lists in Sites" setting, as far as I can see.
If LeonPavesic is still monitoring this, it would be great to have additional input.- Johnny0000May 30, 2024Brass Contributor
