Onedrive status icon folder stuck on Sync Pending in file explorer
Onedrive status icon folder stuck on Sync Pending in file explorer.
Tried to delete hidden temp files but icon doesn't change.
Any advice? Is this a know bug?
- GreenAntCopper ContributorIssue still exists in 2023.
I've just spent hours fixing this issue and hunting for hidden files.
And now I just created a new empty directory and this is stuck with the sync icon.
ITS JUST AN EMPTY DIRECTORY!
When OneDrive gets itself in a mess like this how can we trust it. - tinkernaCopper Contributor
Every week or so I get a comment from this post that reassures me that Microsoft will never ever fix this problem. I still have stuck sync icons on every onedrive and every PC. Sad.
- benzhiCopper ContributorHey there,
encountered the same problem today. Stop-start sync did not work, shutting down both personal and business Onedrivers did not help either, rebooted several times, no effect. My Onedrive was telling me it was in sync and the folder was created and had only been edited on the device that gave me the problem.
Ultimately solved the problem by following the steps hinted by engkaram, although all my folders were already showing hidden items. However, newly applying this setting to all folders uncovered a desktop.ini file with a sync pending status that I was able to remove after shutting down OneDrive. One extra reboot and the folder was out of the sync pending state. Hope this helps other users with the same problem.- benzhiCopper ContributorWell... that was a bit optimistic... It solved the problem with renaming an underlying folder, but not with renaming the parent folder after all...
So, like I read in another post above, by now this also applies to me: this problem drives me nuts! It hat cost me hours already, apparently the bug has existed for over two years already and now the only solution is to unlink en newly setup OneDrive again? #payingcustomer #deeplyannoyed
Somehow, I feel like suggestions by other users are true: this seems like an explorer problem, since Onedrive rightfully tells me it is in sync. As if there is some registry entry blocking the folder- Mike_APCopper ContributorFor me this problem (i.e. when using files on demand, some folders incorrectly show sync pending status, though OneDrive shows all up to date, and no hidden/system/temp files are involved) seems to be linked to incomplete search indexing. In my case, indexing seems to have become stuck, and on clearing the search index the sync pending errors were also cleared and, now the index has eventually been rebuilt, sync pending error seems to be staying clear. Fingers crossed.

I'm a heavy OneDrive user and this issue happens when I delete and move too many large files at the same time. It happens every quarter when I start moving files from one of my OneDrive accounts to my other corporate One Drive account.
I normally delete and change the file names to correct it. This time, however, I was changing too many GB with OneDrive at the same time at the sync issues are happening at the main folder level and I don't want to use "Disable file on demand" because I have too many GB purposely not on my computer. But given that I can only change the file name online (I can't change the file folders on my computer), this may be the only way. I'll post what happens ...
- daffidalCopper ContributorIt worked. I just restarted my computer, changed the folder names on my computer (or the online version and restart) and they are all syncing properly. I'll now change the file names back. But thank fully I didn't have to download the files that I don't want to download!
- dptucson1Copper ContributorI have the same problem, but none of these solutions worked. I have no shared files in the folder, no hidden files, no temporary files. Yet the folder still shows that OneDrive is syncing. I've read this might be related to Microsoft Office files (which I DO have in the folder), but I don't see anyway to fix it.

I had the same issue and what I had to do to resolve it is
1) Login to https://portal.office.com and go to one drive.
2) On the left select "Shared"
3) On the top of the middle frame select "Shared by You"
At this point I had a handful of files so I clicked on the 3 dots, clicked manage access and stopped sharing all of them.
The issue was resolved for me at this point once I paused and started the sync on the local OneDrive.
Hope this helps!
Thomas.

I have the very same folder sync issues. I am only using the folders by myself, so there isn't any sharing issue with others.
What helped me was just changing folder names and change them back again. The key is that you need to be patient.
So what I did:
- Change the folder name for the folder with sync errors. I just added a number after the folder name.
- OneDrive will sync the folder name and the sync status will be correct again.
- Wait for a day (maybe you are able to wait less, but this is what I did).
- Change the folder name back again to the original name.
- OneDrive will sync the folder name and the sync status will be correct again.
If you change the folder name and after a minute change the folder name back again to the original name, the sync errors will occur again.
Hope this will help you (and others) too!
- m_emelchenkovCopper ContributorI have the same problem. It does not depends sync I several thousands files, or only hundred, but for some files icon has "Pending sync" status. It seems it is random, because these files are not hidden, and directories contains them does not have hidden files. Tested on a fresh Windows Server 2022 + SharePoint 2019.

I never have found a solution this, only a workaround. As others have mentioned...
- Create a new folder
- Move all the files to the new folder
- Delete the one that won't sync
This usually works for me, though sometimes it takes quite a while for those folders with tons of files. Sometimes, I can't delete or rename the old folder for a few days. But I've occasionally been successful removing it in the web interface when I couldn't do it in Windows.

First I had to disable "Hide protected operating System files" and delete all the un-synced temp files (most started with "~") per the instructions from jaymzwood
That fixed the sync status of most of the folders, but there were still a few stragglers that had this issue--but no hidden temp files.
Then I followed soepah method to rename those folders and wait 5-10 seconds for the icon to turn green, then rename them back. The icon would turn back to sync, but change to green again within a few seconds.
All the folders are green now--yay! And MS still hasn't fixed this bug as of April 2021--boo!- Brian_LynchCopper Contributor
Jon Larson I also have this issue happening to me in the last day and can not gain any solution from the above forum.
Just wondering where to go next ? Has anyone any idea ?

soepah your solution works, but only if there are no sub folders that are also stuck on the sync icon. If you have sub folders, you have to change their names first, then the parent folder. And if you have a whole structure of sub folders (as I did) you're screwed. You'll be facing a mega project of renaming hundreds of folders!

Have the same problem. Normal explorer shows all files synced. When trying to open document from file explorer nothing appears in Word. When I try opening up file from within Word that explorer shows the same folders as pending synchronization and I get an error message about file not found. The the strange thing is that the file now places itself in the recently opened list in word, and when I click on that link the file opens up normally.
Summary: I can't open files from explorer, get an error message when trying to open from within Word explorer, but can finally open document from recently opened files after trying to open the file from within Word explorer.... KevinVdh
