Teams - active users in team analytics
Hi,
could you please tell me what is the definition of an active user within a team?
In Manage team, there is a tab called Analytics showing number of active/inactive users. But I was not able to find out what is the definition of active user. Is it someone who just reads posts? Or do they need to be engage in some activity - liking, posting etc.?
If someone receives a notification about a new post, clicks on the notification and reads the post - are they considered as active users or not?
Thank you!

- MegaJimmyCopper ContributorHi, I am currently running a team within the company to promote AI trends and new knowledge, but I am also very confused about the so-called active user definition.
It seems that users do not have to click emoji or leave messages to be considered active users. I want to I would like to ask if the clicks on the "See More" and "See Less" buttons on these posts will also be regarded as active users? - Hi Anna_Prochazkova
Here we go - see the following article
https://tomtalks.blog/2019/12/how-does-microsoft-define-microsoft-teams-active-users/
“We define DAU as the maximum daily users performing an intentional action in the last 28-day period across the desktop client, mobile client and web client,” Microsoft 365 corporate VP Jared Spataro recently said.
So what’s an “intentional action”?
“Examples of an intentional action includes starting a chat, placing a call, sharing a file, editing a document within teams, participating in a meeting, etc.”
Microsoft removes “passive actions” like auto-start/login, minimizing a screen, or closing the app from its calculations, and de-dupes all actions across a single user ID. So these users really are taking some kind of active action.
Hope that answers your question!

ChrisHoardMVP hello,
I have a question regarding the analytics.
Is there a chance to see analytics of the particular channel in the team?
Looking forward to your answer,
Olesia
- elysaroskoCopper ContributorBringing this conversation back to top. Employee here (hi!). From the above documentation, it seems that an Active User takes intention actions—can we please have a list of all actions that can be counted? For example, if someone gets Teams notifications via email for all posts, and clicks on the link in their email, and reads ALL the posts but never likes or comments, is that NOT considered an active user?
Additional requests: Can we see Top Active Channels (why only showing Inactive currently?) and is there a way to track *most* Active Users? Like a leaderboard of sorts? Thanks!

ChrisHoardMVP Thank you for the clarification. However, I still don´t understand what actions make a user considered as active user.
I understand that some actions are considered as active and it is completely logical - e.g. starting a new post, calling etc. But what about only reading posts? Or active looking to channels, e.g. at files without editing them?
These are actions I am quite confused about - because if I have like 5 out of 10 inactive users in my team, does it mean that they do not go to the team at all? Or does that only mean that they are not actively engaged, e.g. liking posts?- lama_ShantiCopper Contributor
@Christopher Hoard Kindly advice regarding the inactive users shall I consider inactive user that he/ she didn't join the channel or group, and didn't see any posts?
As Anna_Prochazkova asked does it mean that they do not go to the team at all? Or does that only mean that they are not actively engaged, e.g. liking posts?
- DazzaRIron ContributorWe're an EDU tenant. I follow Tom's blog and found different results. I raised a ticket with Premier support and all it resulted in was them asking me to raise a uservoice. I.e kick it into the long grass. https://microsoftteams.uservoice.com/forums/555103-public/suggestions/39250318-teams-usage-report-shouldn-t-include-active-user
- I can't say why that disparity is there or the reason for why it appears out of kilter. As Tom's article outlines, that is the party line from Microsoft and what they recognise as being an active user and for what they consider to be DAU.
It seems strange that the response should have been to open a uservoice, unless they were implying to raise it as a bug. I have raised it direct to the MS Teams team, including this thread and the uservoice. I have also requested they publish an official article on what exactly constitutes DAU. We may not get these, but I have put this in front of them through raising it as a bug directly.
Best, Chris
