Attaching a gif displays "Sent a gif"
This just started happening recently. When I am chatting with someone and I use the GIF icon to attach a gif, I see the gif just fine until I post the message, at which time the gif goes away and is replaced by a link titled "Sent a GIF". Clicking on the link takes me to the image on giphy.com.
The person I'm chatting with sees it fine.
Is there a setting for this somewhere? Why is this happening?
ANOTHER IMPORTANT UPDATE: MindeaLLC, we have discovered that the issue only occurs for "Guest" users in Teams. Users that are native to the Azure tenant do not see this issue.
Since I have both a native and a guest account on Teams, I was able to test this issue, as shown below.

Click on Profile Icon on the top left (typically where your picture is).
Manage Account > Privacy > "Optional Connected Experiences" turn on.- vickivail67Copper Contributor
I don't see anything that says 'Manage Account' when I click on my profile icon.
- mmmoore2288Copper Contributor
blackanddan, as MindeaLLC noted, this also did not work as the toggle is already set to "On" for all of us in the team.
- MForrest68Copper Contributor
Team, Ive ran into the same issue.
Global admin
Set the guest permissions
The guests can share gifs from sites like tenor
They get the sent a gif error when using the gifs native to teams.
We tried to pop out the chat
Confirmed the settings for optimized experience are set correctly.
Has anyone else found anything here? Maybe a power shell cmdlet to set it manually?

blackanddan "Optional Connected Experiences" is already turned on. Tried turning it off and on. Still only seeing "Sent a GIF"
- rotes328Copper ContributorI am having the same issue with an Office 365 Family account. I can send images with Giphy but my wife sees "Sent a GIF" and is prompted to accept Giphy in a loop if she tries to send GIFs or accept ones sent to her. We're in the same family plan. GIFs from other sites work fine. There is no "Optional Connected Experiences" option for personal accounts or admin page.
- Jurgen BrouwerCopper Contributor+1 on the user voice ticket. Let's get more people to upvote it and hopefully get some more attention for it.
Still working fine on the iOS app, but desktop and web are not.- MindeaLLCIron ContributorThe issue is getting worse. Now all Conversations -- not just Chat -- in all Teams are doing the same thing.
- peter_nskCopper ContributorAm I the only one that can no longer even search for GIFs? My Gif Searcher is just loading constantly...
- Nick ManorCopper ContributorI created a UserVoice bug report here: https://microsoftteams.uservoice.com/forums/908686-bug-reports/suggestions/44076141-attaching-a-gif-displays-sent-a-gif
Not sure if Microsoft is still checking this, but a few more up-votes couldn't hurt.- Jurgen BrouwerCopper Contributor
Nick Manor wow, did they just close the User Voice ticket? I didn't get any updates about it, but it looks like it got removed?
https://microsoftteams.uservoice.com/forums/908686-bug-reports/suggestions/44076141-attaching-a-gif-displays-sent-a-gif doesn't work anymore 😮

Jurgen Brouwer It looks like Microsoft finally shutdown the Teams UserVoice site. They have been slowly migrating away from UserVoice (a 3rd party product) and are preferring an in-house platform. I am not sure where all the UserVoice data migrated to, if at all.

Nick Manor, I can not open this link, it brings me to the list of all Teams tickets. Is it still available?
- vkonchukCopper Contributor
So far found following workaround:
With GIFs, just find the one you want, and ignore any of the options to embed/copy link/etc. Just right click on the GIF and select copy, then paste directly into the chat.

I have a ticket open with Microsoft on this. I'm not being too pushy on the ticket but I'm not letting the ticket die either. They already tried to pull the ole "this is expected behavior" on me and I didn't accept that as a resolution.
- Allen1900Copper ContributorMS has told me its an "issue with design" and it will be fixed in a future update. When I asked if I could be contacted when the update is pushed out the tech assigned to my ticket said "well no, because it could be 3 months, 6 months, 1 year".
So good job Microsoft on breaking something that was working perfectly fine and then having no idea how to fix it. Of course I'm doubting if the Teams team is even working on this.
- tiberriver256Copper ContributorSame issue for me as a guest user. Would love to see a fix.
- herrmeyerCopper Contributor
By the way... I have this issue for 2-3 weeks now. No update from ms, no response here or anywhere. Did nobody on ms recognize this issue? Or did nobody declarate this as an issue?
If not, where can I sent or place problems to (This is a real question, I don't know where to place issues I am having with ms products)?
- herrmeyerCopper Contributor
This is a real good question. Where to place such an issues?
There will be a day, it is working again. And nowhere you will find any hint why and how it as been fixed. That is microsoft.
- tscamell-vtCopper Contributor+1 here. We also have this same issue for all our guest account users 😞 We'd also found the pop-out chat to be working as a "workaround"
Please fix this Microsoft, we're having to resort to words to communicate with our partners and it's simply not as effective 😄 - mmmoore2288Copper Contributor

Thanks for pointing out this detail, mmmoore2288 and I have now confirmed your finding.
I am an IT consultant and as such am a Guest on all my clients' Teams. I have brought hundreds of users to Teams but now can't enjoy this simple feature.
It's annoying that this has suddenly popped up. I hope Microsoft adds an adjustable setting for this in the near future.
- peter_nskCopper ContributorI have the exact same issue as a guest user on another companys tenant. Also started just very recently (end og august). Suuuper annoying I totally agree!
- TerpnInMNCopper Contributor
This worked for our team.. its a setting that somehow got disabled
- CCCC10Copper ContributorThis was it! Thank you!!
- mmmoore2288Copper Contributor
Thank you TerpnInMN, but I believe this is a different issue than the thread you referenced.
In this case GIFs are not disabled, but GIFs from giphy.com specifically are not properly embedded into messages. Instead a "Sent a GIF" message appears for all users on GIFs from giphy.com, but not for GIFs from other websites.
Below I have pasted all of the settings from the main instance of Teams that my group controls the tenant for. All of the settings appear to be in line with the article you referenced, yet we still have this issue.
- Stev0nCopper Contributor
optional experience worked for me! thanks!
- mmmoore2288Copper Contributor
IMPORTANT UPDATE: MindeaLLC and everyone following this thread, our team found something interesting.
The GIFs only appear to show the problematic "Sent a GIF" message when the originating from Giphy. If you copy in a GIF from another website, like tenor.com for example, the embedding works.
- nljugglerCopper Contributor
I'm also experiencing this now. Very annoying. It takes away all the fun and expression.
BTW. In my case the recipient doesn't see the gif either. They see a similar link.- mmmoore2288Copper ContributorAgreed. Both the recipient and the sender only see the "Sent a GIF" message.
We are are a multi-tenant organization, and we've noticed that this only occurs on some of the Azure tenants, not all of them. Some of the tenants we can control as general admin, some we cannot.
We have tried setting the Giphy content settings on the Mircosoft Teams Admin settings to "Not Restricted", but still no change on the tenant we can control. If anyone has any suggestions of what else we might try, I'm happy to give them a shot.
